  • Nora Leggs,

Lovely Lilith! It all looks so inviting. I love the last two light and water pictures especially - you've created liquid paua : )

  • Kebabette,

So beautiful. So very beautiful I've got springy tears in my eyes. Lovely work Lilith, and Merry Christmas to you, Jackson and all the Capture photographers, writers, and commenters - you're an awesome crew.

  • Hebe,

Wonderful captures Lilith. Liquid paua indeed. And the sand/water shots glow. These made me feel summer! Does it ever get really warm down there? Is it the Brighton area?

  • Lilith __,

Thanks all! It can be very cold down there, but also scorching. It's very changeable, with showers passing through unpredictably. There are lots of rainbows!

The day I took those rockpool photos, my toes were almost blue with cold. But not as blue as the jellyfish. :-)

Lovely pics, Lillith, and looking forward to having you here – you are missing such a lot! :-)

We have had a lot of chilly wind from the south lately. The misty streaks of blowing sand can be seen in this photo. I walked with my back to it – most refreshing in every sense.

On that same walk I took a number of photos of patterns in the sand. As I approached this one I wondered if it was a sheeps skull, but no, it's the remains of a bull-kelp hold-fast.

The beach was deliciously empty of people. Just a few footprints to keep me company...

    Thank you Leigh! Me too.

I think kelp holdfasts are amazing – gripping so strongly to the rock that even the worst storms seldom dislodge them. And taking the weight of a human being is no challenge at all!

  • Geoff Lealand,

Dear Nelson PA'rs; I will be in Nelson for the new few days as father-in-law is in steep decline and meeting up a drink at a local bar would be a welcome relief from the joys of the rest home. Just email me at lealand@waikato.ac.nz if it is possible or desired.

Beach houses are of course a coastal feature.

This one spotted yesterday. Little overdone, maybe.

These fascinating skeins of light and colour are caustics , complex refractions of light caused by uneveness in the water surface.

There's a (much more complicated) explanation here , but if you ignore the text, the diagrams are helpful!
