She’s looking very pretty Jackie and well done you for all your hard work. I haven’t had much chance for new shots but there is this relatively recent one of Stella at work. She’s a hard lil’ worker. ;)
And this wee precious that t’other freed from a fence entanglement the other day on the side of the road. After fruitless efforts to locate its owner or home, wee thing settled in for the night to a jolly good feed. Nek morn ,out for pee and gone, I assume his owner (who must have been handy) found him by whistle.

  • Jackie Clark,

This morning something happened which I initially thought was very amusing, and then a friend pointed out how indicative it was of the ill treatment that our Ruby had known very early in her life. And she's right. We are still working on The Behavioural Issues which are the legacy of that treatment, but we are largely, I think, past them, apart from the odd outbreak or two that tells us just how damaged she has been by some bastard, or other. (To which end, a muzzle has been deployed. Looks ugly, makes people laugh when she tries to pick up balls or sticks with it on, but hey, you do what you have to to make your beloveds safe). Anyway, here's the video of what I thought at first was so funny. It seems small - she can't get down the steps because she's afraid - but it speaks to her general fear, which is now much lessened, and how scary some very simple things in life are for her.

Stairs are often learning issues for dogs Jackie. Of course you know Ruby best (my loss) but there is something about the different levels and dog walk styles not mixing automatically. Love the affection reward when successful.

  • Nora Leggs,

Is that the lovely russet coloured dog or the beagle? Russet dog belongs to a friend and lives happily on a rural property.
Beagle is one of my dog-in-laws. Lovely dogs if you can keep the food right in the middle of the table.
Funniest beagle moment was with a previous ex-maf beagle who saw his chance when a platter of corn chips had been left on a low coffee table – flying through the air he landed straddling the platter and hoed into them as if he had not eaten for weeks. Still chomping as he was hauled off and banished.

Just to keep the dogs happy, I happen to have dog photos. And a video. Imagine that! The first one is my Mum’s dog Ollie who is, though small, a very bravehearted young man. (As small dogs often are). My mother now has him doing equine things. Yes.
And the next one is of Ruby swimming with a friend. Ruby's never liked the water much, but I had got her to the point where she would go in up to her chest. I knew that it would be another dog that would motivate her, and so it was to be. Wonderful.

  • Hebe, in reply to Jackie Clark,

One for you Jackie: our 8 year old labrador has been getting very fat. She was a pedigree breeder's dog and we were given her four years ago. She was the breeder's favourite and last of a line of champions, so the breeder wanted to keep her gene pool in reserve "just in case". We l ruled out preganancy for a number of reasons, not the least being she was too old to have pups.
Last weekend her nipples swelled, and we concluded it was a false pregnancy. Yesterday morning she started panting: I googled, intensively. Then pop, out went her stomach sideways at midday.

So a visit to the vet last evening: pregnant and due to pop within 24 hours! Shock and awe in the household. This morning she has just delivered number 5 black puplet-- all with lab noses ,ears and tails and white stars on their fat little bellies.

You just never know what every day will bring! We're all stunned. Will post pics...

Any colour you like, as long it's black and white. Some have white-dipped tails and paws. The squeaking is tremendous when they want feeding. The oldest ones have doubled their birth size already.

Pic no 2: an origami of puppies.

  • Hebe,

Pupdate: Sadly the litter are premature and very small. Four died overnight and the mother has rejected the remaining four. A visit to our lovely vet this morning confirmed this. Our 15-year-old has decided to attempt to save a couple of the remaining four by hand-feeding. It will be surprising if any make it through. Cara the mum is doing well and bright-eyed; she seems to have made her decision after being very wrought when the first died last night.

So, an intense reminder of life and death and the greater cosmic-ness for our family.
