The one-way system has to go. There was no need for it when we had a City Centre and there's no need for it now.
Two way traffic and no parking on the side, (sounds like cycle lanes to me). This will lead to slower travel across town, allowing for more cycling and walking.
Planning for good public transport as a carrot will have the stick of less street carparks.
Traffic Engineers as a profession are a deadly joke - see Manners Mall.As for Athfield, most of what he says is accepted as logical. The way he says it comes from his love of wine & is the main problem.
All comments on Heritage accepted as he has no interest in it other than its destruction. Which is what happened to all of his stairswells in every building he designed in Christchurch. How do you like that 1980s buildings now? -

Ian Athfield was my Mum and Dad’s best man at their wedding in Christchurch. He is from Christchurch.
Jus’ sayin’ {;)I stand corrected. And I'm not saying he's a bad person, or a bad architect, just that he's not a town planner, and he's made very aggressive public statements about both eliminating the one-way system and reducing public transport. This makes me very angry. It's not his business.

There was a YouTube video a while back that seems to have vanished. In a repeated loop, Ian Athfield appears about to make some kind of public statement. An orange-jacketed and visibly annoyed Mayor Parker aggressively inserts himself between Athfield and the camera and takes a pace backwards, effectively shoving the relatively diminutive architect out of shot.
Athfield's sudden post-quake involvement, and even more sudden departure, now seems just another loopy chapter in what's becoming a very ugly saga. Lyn Williams's interesting - for me - opinion piece has been online since last December. It's the kind of thing that the Press reject in favour of the witterings of Mike Yardley.

I really don't know what to think about that wobbly writing on a whiteboard propped against a chair, even carparks have more "Official" looking signs. You can't take these things seriously...?.
The whole situation seems to be in the control of clowns, how do you know when it's "Red Nose Day" down there?. -

Lyn Williams makes some fair points about the sacking of ECan and the sweeping antidemocratic powers of CERA and Brownlee, and about the seeming cronyism between central government and Parker and business interests, but he lost me when he connects these things with red-zoning.

To tell you the truth i have no clue who is doing what but to step inside the cordon of these tow beaches would not be in my interest. There is back up somewhere and all they have to do is call the cops and hey presto.
Frankly i am losing interest at the entire Schlamassel . -

Good question. Effectively, insofar as the position of "architectural ambassador" has any practical meaning, he's been gone for months. In practice his status seems to be every bit as nebulous as the distinction between Council and Cera. Presumably there's some form of stipend involved.
As for Williams, I didn't have a problem with the piece, apart from its pessimism being all too convincing. -

Anyway we are still waiting for EQC to repair our place so i thought it fit take a break and see the wee seal pups. A great joy is seeing them not afraid of humans (yet)and behaving as little ones do. barking and squealing like kindergarten kids.

The Crown Plaza might be fun to watch, but try working there.
We get the thudding vibrations and jolts up the spine that make concerntration, a little hard.
I dread going to work, not for the job but the environment. I'm calling the Central Bulldozer District, Mordor these days.
Will be leaving town soonish. -

I know what you mean. Whenever I'm in the bakery round the corner where huge demolition trucks thunder past, the very same feeling . I recall a lot of liquefaction on the 22nd of Feb and it must be just bog where the building was built. I did take a picture of the crowne plaza a few days ago and watched a young man holding a coffee cup and a cigarette. There is obviously no place to have a break and no time.
Sad to think you have to leave to get peace in your workplace.

Ouch; I was insensitive. I loathe the thuds and thumps and feel daily blessed that I do not work near the red zone. Not only the noise ,but the demo dust must contain all sorts of nastiness -- and I have seen nothing that makes me believe air quality is being managed (or that it is even possible to manage). A sticky grunge covers the outside of our house now -- I thought it would stop once the liquefaction down the road and around the corner was dealt with. I'm assuming there is a lot more dust in the air from the demolitions (the CBD is 2 to 3km from our house near the base of the hills).
