The long lost “Queen St” did not jostle for contender status upon its brief release or TV showing. Some of the crew obviously learnt heaps though. The location shoot is a real time capsule. The screen shot shows my first 60 Fairlane, powder blue “tankster” as we called ’em, to the right of characters. Around 15.00 in there are about 8 people sitting on it with 1 clunky continuity error.
“sitting on the hood of a Dodge, drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain” sang the boss. Not in my car, bin full of ice, slippery Leopard lager cans and Muscato Bianco screw top ‘wine’.

A Standard Vanguard Phase III shown being assembled

Which is two phases later than the Vanguard Phase I in David Hood’s card player pic upthread.

Also the green car in that pic appears to be a Morris Series E, (aka E-type Morris) with the peculiar rear-opening doors, of which Islander has mixed memories.

Memories mixed, yep – but you always remember your first car eh?
I looked at that second car and thought, I know you…but I’d have to see your grille-

which you kindly provided -thanks Joe!

I wonder, in 50 or 60 years time, will the PAS blogs of that time be filled with memories of bicycles? The first one, the one one went courting on, the family one, etc?

    Who knows?
My Nanna, born in the 1890s, certainly remembered her first (and subsequent) horse/s, and her first car ride*...

Maybe, she offers wistfully, folk of that distant future will remember their first solar-powered dirigible?

*She never flew, aside from an up/down 5-minuter at an A&P show-

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Looking at - *ahem* - the original photos, it's amazing to see those old cars driven by young dudes. But back then, the cars would have been, what, 20 years old - the perfect age for a reasonably priced second-hand car.

But now, all those young stallions with the sexual bellbottom trousers and the tight shirts, they're all older, balder, fatter, greyer. But I bet many of them still have the cars.

    memories of bicycles?

We will almost certainly do a dedicated cycling thread at some stage, given the penchant of our host, and many posters, for said vehicle. That being the case, perhaps you could save up your cycling photos, or go out and take some more over summer even?

Not that I'm trying to control what and when you post or anything. Well, maybe just a little bit. ;-)

Well, back on track then. This was an old friends Jaguar XJR sports series. Nice car. I could go for that. It is situated at another friends place 2008. The dirt indicates we had travelled 400km innit.:))

Station transport, early 50's. My grandfather driving, father/aunt the small blondes, the rest shearers/farmhands off to the "old" woolshed because the river was too high to bring the sheep across to the new one for shearing.

Scanning the old albums is a current project here as well.

  • Kumara Republic,

Funny story my dad told me once... he worked in the accounts department of the old NZ Motor Corp years ago, and during that time NZMC was getting CKD kits from what had become British Leyland. He recalls that many of the panels fit so badly that they had to be hammered into shape before welding. When they started bringing in Honda CKD's, they fit perfectly in place like a jigsaw, and the rest as they say is history.

Great pic Robert. Those things were known as univeral carriers, or more commonly in NZ, bren gun carriers. An awful lot of them seem to have been flogged off to civilians after WW2. I remember a few derelict ones from my youth, but never saw a live one running. Here's a shot from a local wartime factory.

Not exactly a Flash Car, but a nice old motor, all the same. A Wolseley Six-Ninety spotted at the bottom of Boulcott Street, Wellington, in April 2006.

My sister and her man collected old cars. She still has a Citroen light 15. These I imagine are still in that shed on his farm.

Have only just seen this post Sofie - have been a bit teary-eyed looking through these as it was the kind of stuff I used to mull over with my Dad, and he isn't here to chat to anymore. His first car was a Citroen light 15, so proud of it, but unfortunately I can't get at the pics just now. Might have to ask my mum to dig them out. Lovely memories.

I'm waiting for access to ours. I have some neat old stuff in my mind for here. :)

For those who like Fords. This baby was taken at the Houhora Pub in 2007 on our way to Cape Reinga. I think the Landlord still owns it as I met someone recently at a pool comp who knew the car.

It's an EH. I had an HT, sedan, will place photo later. The EH, my bro had one, two tone aqua body, white on roof, house speakers and mattress, Raglan 1974, Crime Of The Century on cassett player, 6 pu boards on top, single fins all. Now he has a Merc SW.
Now I have a 6 speed VW TSI golf to get there faster, playing MP3's, one board inside the car, roofrack still there, epoxy 3 fin.
    Rules change, change rules.
P.S. one person's flash car is another's beater.
