Did anyone see Rackets? At Laneway Lite I only caught sight of one of them at the gate.

  • Mark Thomas,

Did anyone else think the lack of big screens was a little odd? It must have contributed to the massive crowding, as it was pretty hard to see the performers at the main stages or the small stage without being really close up

Got close up quite easily for Parquet Courts - who I really like
Not great photos but sunlight on the lads emphasises the 'highlight' for me.

Why would you want a stage name with a given name as gorgeous as Camille Berthomier?

This captures some of that live intensity. Drummer was boss too. And the guitarist? Don’t get me started.

  • Danielle,

It is possible that I was too far back in the crowd to appreciate the clearly widely-liked Savages. It is also possible that I am a bit too much of a shallow pop-ho and they're just... not really my thing. Where are my easily digestible hooks? :)

You're not alone. I didn't think their actual music matched the high-concept.

  • Russell Brown,

    Anyway ...

I had a great time, but I wouldn't want to see any more than 10,000 people on the site. There was a point, about 4-6pm, when there queues and crowds all over the place, and Jim and I got caught in a crush around the Cactus Cat stage -- which doesn't provide the kind of capacity or quality of production the artists there deserve.

What can be done about it on the present site, I'm not sure.

Was one of the worst festival experiences I've experienced - thank you to the dude bros and the dude girls for your puerile, entitled and drunken selves. No matter where we tried to stand there they were play fighting, obsessing over their phones , backward caps, constantly pushing and generally being dicks. Left way earlier than we'd planned as we'd just had enough of not being able to see the silo stage (where most of whom we wanted to see played) and the mainstages just being uncomfortable with the constant pushing past and dickishness. This was quite a contrast from BDO and laneways prior - felt sorry for those trying to actually enjoy the bands they'd gone to see

Logistically the setup desperately needed screens so the crowd could see (and a much reduced capacity) and the stupid food coupon tagged onto the booze tickets whilst a nice thought and touch was just wrong... given the awesome food options who would want a over priced coke, donut or chips?

I'd go on but thankfully Lorde last night made up for the disappointment of Monday - she was fab, the crowd was a pleasure to be amongst and so so awesome to see all those children with their parents.

I believe its the last year for laneway in the current location - a shame as it is a mint spot and whilst I didn't enjoy this year the previous two held there were simply fantastic. I hope they can find another suitable spot that suits the festival and can handle the numbers needed to make these things viable and enjoyable for all

That was my feeling as well. Strange to think that the BDO crowd was arguably more pleasant than the Laneway crowd!

And like you say, the Lorde gig more than made up for it

Not that strange - the BDO crowd are primarily motivated by some of the acts on the bill (music), many on Monday seemed to be there to "be there" and acted accordingly. Plus more room to breathe/stand/wander between and around all the stages (which had screens)

  • Craig Ranapia,

If we can move past the ridiculous headlines our nanna daily has put out there, the fans were thrilled.

Yeah, and I thought this passage from the review was... well, gratuitously bitchy.

The only sign of diva behaviour - after her mini Twitter rant at New Zealand's media following a scuffle at Auckland Airport earlier in the day - was the 20-minute delayed start time and a couple of extra f-bombs in front of those kids.

Jesus, fuck -- Lorde posted (and deleted) a mildly snarky Tweet after her parents got barged by photographers. Come on, Ella, a proper diva would have at least tried to beat a photographer to death with an already half-empty duty free bottle while posting selfies of the act.

Oh, and my sources at the gig reported precisely two "fucks." I'm sure the lamentations of traumatized children and the stench of decaying moral fibre was overwhelming, but everyone else (judging from my social media) really enjoyed the show and a really mellow crowd. Hell, it sounds like something even a crusty old live gig-phobe like me would have really enjoyed.

As for the snark about the delayed start time. Hell, perhaps she was warming up her potty mouth. Perhaps there were tech issues to sort. Or maybe she was just getting her shit together, because the last time I did a long haul flight from North America I was barely capable of coherent, non-vomiting speech for days let alone getting on stage and nailing a gig.

Wow guys, it's amazing how we had such different experiences, of both festivals. Apart from it being almost impossible to get a drink at BDO, we had a few pre-loaders stumble into us, and at the start of Snoop, got very uncomfortable when someone was whirly-gigging around, apparently looking to 'engage' with any body they bumped into.

We spent very little time at the Cactus Cat stage on Monday, and I can see what Russell is saying, but I found I could get in and out of the main stage crowds comparatively easily. Just in case it wasn't obvious, all photos were taken from the crowd, as I didn't have a media pass. I do hope in the BDO case they get the best out of their new site next year, and that Laneway finds another spot worthy of the festival.

Anyhoo, as you say, let's not dwell on it too much. Last night was fantastic.

I did enjoy the music between Watercolours and Lorde's sets too. I'd never heard Lou Reed's cover of "This Magic Moment" before, what a cracker

  • Heather Gaye, in reply to bob daktari,

Agree with everything you've written, except I didn't bother with drinking coupons, & I wouldn't go so far as "worst festival experience"* - just wasn't feeling it though. I was really weirded out that there was such a stark difference in the nature of the crowd to previous years. I think that the notable boorishness is partly a product of the size of the crowd as well, though. I think it would've been less annoying with maybe 600-1000 fewer people there. I ended up leaving early because I felt like there was nowhere to escape to.

I would've spent most of my time at the Cactus Cat stage, except the crowd was beyond capacity, and the two acts I did catch, I had to put up with people shouting across me at each other through the whole performance.

Lorde show was just lovely though, even though the crowd was the same size in a smaller area (go figure). Nice to see entire families out, that in itself changed the tone for me.

    * ETA: curiously enough, that title goes to the first Laneway, held in the (former) Britomart carpark. An absolute debacle. The next three were fantastic.

Yeah, the logistics at Laneway were generally great, still way better than BDO, & I noticed that the main stages were pretty easy to negotiate, even reasonably close to the front.

I wasn't being particularly pushed or jostled, but there was just something a bit... squawky/boofheady about the crowd. Much lower proportion of hipsters and rockabilly types, more of the kind of people I associate with a friday night in the viaduct. I kind of expect that crowd at BDO (plus teenage goths/metalheads), but I think the more annoying ones are (mostly) confined to the bar areas, which I don't frequent any more, because of the queues.

  • Danielle,

That was my first Laneway (since at every other one I have either been enormously pregnant or caring for a newborn) so I have no basis for comparison, but I didn't really have too many issues with the crowd. The only time I felt a little iffy was during the exodus from Haim, since they had such a large audience.
