I think the fan-gathering might have been for Lorde, who we saw in with the punters in front of Jungle, and was (nice to report) getting very little over-attention that we could see, aside from the odd startled double-take from people making their way past. So New Zealand.
I didn't mind Jungle at all, I quite like seeing a mid-afternoon band getting a groove going, starts setting up the rest of the day a bit better. Also thought Courtney Barnett clearly didnt give a rats what others think in the nicest and most time-honoured rock best sense of the word way. With more than a hint of Paul Kelly.
I'm not much of a metal fan. but I really liked Jakob - realise I hadn't given them any credit before, but they were putting out some massive proggy noise, and their drummer is awesome.
Saw a little bit of Eagull in the Thunderdome. Lead singer sporting some impressive tude, noise a little bit fuzzy and squally so hard to hear what he was saying. Only lasted a few songs before decamping.
Loved Little Dragon - right time and right place for that sound.
Also thought Future Islands were great - lived up to the billing, and always good to see a lead singer putting in the effort (you can say what you like about Bono - lord knows I have - but you can usually not fault his effort, and the Future Islands guy was the same).
FKA Twigs also a highlight.
Underwhelmed by Mac De Marco (possibly because my 15 year old daughter is a fan and I was sub-consciously maintaining a generation gap), and by Belle & Sebastian who felt a little Pet Shop Boys-lite on the day.
Always a good day. Saw some seriously sun-burnt people though!

FKA Twigs visually impressive but she's not really my thing. I am so, so glad I made the breakaway to see St Vincent. Man, I have never seen anything like it, never seen a gal shred a guitar like Annie Clark did (3 guitars actually up - loved the green one at the end). One of the best live performances I've ever seen. Period. As it's been mentioned, don't know why she wasn't on one of the main stages.
Some of the earlier acts like Angus/Julia Stone and Angle Olsen would have worked better on the more intimate Cactus Cat stage. CC stage suffered I felt through being very bassy and distorted early on. Fortunately sorted out by time St Vincent closed the day.
Other highlights for me - the Kiwis - the cutesy tunes of Princess Chelsea right from the start and later Connan Mockasin, Craziest set of the day, Ariel Pink - who's ever seen a aqua bikini clad drummer with a stetson before?!); Royal Blood and Future Islands, especially the way they presented it and the audience vibe they created.
Whole day had a great vibe; saw no agro, just one couple being taken out who didn't have bracelets. Those drink chits were a little annoying, lost a couple in the queue in the beer tent. Great shots Jackson. I saw Leather Man walk right past too.

No-one's mentioned Flying Lotus. When St Vincent finished, I was ready to head home and merely glanced across at the far stage and just kept going. Maybe it was good, maybe not but after SV, I was determined to leave on a high :-)

Just to keep things rolling, here are some dodgy pics (Jackson got a bunch of better ones) from last night’s post-Laneway Connan Mockasin gig for the Herald’s Sundae Sessions, on the roof of 1 High Street in the city.
You know, most bands go into a session looking to get tight, clean versions of their five key songs. Connan and his band just kind of got loose. The finale was Connan’s dad Abe taking a break from necking free Heinekens to step up and take the lead vocal on ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. The man has a lovely tenor.

Loose? I kept thinking of the production team piecing together the footage and sound, then editing the dad jokes, and bad jokes, while making a publishable show. Hugh is a man of many talents. This will use all of them.
1) The backing singers were easier to identify, in spite of wigs.
2) Connan with his back to camera and audience, and guitarist sitting down.

and free cups to drink it with too, that's such a good idea.
Speaking of water, a buddy of mine had his empty 1.25L water bottle taken off him by security on the way in. Their reason - the bottle is too big. wtf is that about?

I had a good day but boy was it hot, and the concrete is punishing on the body. I enjoyed lots of the acts but due to my diminutive stature and distance I missed out on on visual performance. I thought the shows started pretty low key, and thought Jungle was the first properly fun act of the day. Courtenay Barnett was a revelation, as was FKA Twigs. Race Banyon and Jon Hopkins were lots of fun too. I found Future Island a bit 'meh' but maybe I was too far away? But their songs are really samey...I am gutted I missed St Vincent, based on the consensus above, but I was vibing out to Flying Lotus instead. That act would have been amazing to watch lying on a grassy slope somewhere.
Note to self - get following day off work for 2016.

Deviating slightly but I couldn't help putting this up, from a new Civilian post today. After quite some time away, Ben Uffindell is back with a vengeance on this last week, featuring the Key, Plunket, Catton 'triangle'. And another today on hipsters!

With more time to edit and consider, I’ve changed two of the lead in photos for Hollie Fullbrook and Courtney Barnett. The first is just better I think, and trying to capture some of Courtney Barnett’s energy.
Also, for the Belle and Sebastian fans who have waited years for a tour, here’s a few more.
