Inter-species synchronised preening on the Taruheru River this morning - pied shag, and little shag.

Well, they could keep that up for a few minutes, and then the big one cried "enough!".

And then the little one agreed, but ...

Snappo. No contrast bumping here, just pinhole function and what-not. (And of course the natural smoke filter)

Laser fun…. with the moon all pink from the natural smoke filter of the scrub fires on Waiheke.

'Lectric candyfloss. Pink moon up there; rainbow clouds at Sumner mid-afternoon down here (sadly no camera -- we've been where the phones don't go for a few weeks and I've become used to carrying Bug Balm rather than technology).

I biked the Western Okataina track from Lake Okereka to the Okataina Outdoor Education Centre last week. The swim in the lake afterwards was heaven!

Hmm! Camping. Tom Petty had the best thing to say on this activity: You don't have to live like a refugee

  • Jos, in reply to Richard Stewart,

lake Okataina is a treasure, a quietly forgotten one, no baches, no speed boats, a retro lodge with stuff you can rent (kayaks, fishing rods) and clear water and peace. I have photographed a wedding in a grove at the edge of the lake in a misty rain. Lovely, no one minded getting damp and there were fantails everywhere.

Oh good. I have not been there, but my first cat - Sit Fishcious aka Sid - is buried there. I like to think of him having a bush to roam (he wasn't a bird hunter).

  • Richard Stewart, in reply to Jos,

Yes Lake Okataina is indeed a treasure. I've been fishing and walking around there for over 25 years on and off, and every time i visit it's just as breathtaking as the first time. Now they've opened up the Western track for mountain biking ; it's rated a grade 3 but it's very steep and rutted in places.

Fire on the mountain. Two pics of the fire damage in the Mt Eden crater caused by a couple of dickheads with fireworks – and a shot facing south of the Aussie bushfire haze that lingered even yesterday.

Didn't realise it was bushfire haze yesterday - maybe that's why we had a beautiful sunset???
