And the Seddon monument. Hm. I'm sure sometimes a tall column is just a tall column!
Of course, symbolising great achievements and esteem, not ... ahm - the other thought never crossed my mind! :-)

1906 Dunedin Railway Station in 2010
Fantastic ChrisW. That totally lives up to the hype.

Those urns, though? Don’t stand nearby in a quake! /Chchparanoia
You should see the stained-glass windows, Jack.

and also to Lilith-
the Dunedin railway station is part of my earliest childhood memories (e.g when my grand-dad was dying, the colours & visions (aside from the sounds - I've always loved steam trains) distracted me from the surrounding adult grief.))
And I've lived in Dunedin for a couple of substantial periods of times, love the place, love the station & railways, and deeply deeply resent the running down
of the system & adjuncts by fukking fukking Nats (o, and mindless Lab party rogerdouglasgnomes...) -

And, thanks Chris!
I've got this as desktop now - should I pay/&/or/acknowledge someone? -

The inside is crazy: like the 1930s and not a soul around other than a lone tour-seller when I went a couple of years ago.

You're welcome Islander, free to a good home and thanks for the acknowledgement already.

The old trains have mostly been replaced since 2010 - Johnsonville line the most recent a few months ago. But the best time for the Wellington Railway station is during the Sevens rugby tournament as it is crowded with normally conservative and restrained Welingtonians and their friends dressed up (or not so dressed) in absolutely anything. Don't have any photos, just vivid images in my head.

Thanks Chris again-my mother, who was just 25 when her father died (a lovely lovely
man-whom I just remember as big warm cuddley and brown hugger) understands my love of the station but associates it with her father’s coffin-
I only knew him until I was 5…) -

I guess the station was grimy and sooty and grey then, no longer glamorously new, not yet proudly old.
But cleaned up on a bright blue-sky day with the flag flying in the wind, blue and gold Otago colours framing it left and right - I can appreciate it would be accentuating the positive rather than the funereal associations.

Not too long ago it was the Rialto Wellington cinema, and since then the Embassy & Paramount have since picked up the slack. Some apartment extensions next door are currently in the works.

The Heritage page says; "The present occupant is the New Zealand Film Archive and Film Centre." I guess I should know, but where have they moved to?

I appreciate your both passing up on that JFGI moment. You're so nice to me. ;-)

Took a lot of shots for that one, the original file is about 40,000 pixels wide ;)

nothing about Auckland at the moment, but maybe in the near future I'll do something similar for your city too ;)

John Chambers and Son 1989.
And again in 2012, now the Xero building.
Doesn't it look smart now? Glad to see an older building rescued.
