  • Damian Christie, in reply to Raymond A Francis,

I got them in Aussie last year, they're actually miniature Havianas - branded and everything - distributed by the company of the same name no doubt. They were quite pricey for a fairly small (about 2m) chain, but I thought they were pretty cool.

But I reckon if someone could be arsed producing a generic version, it'd be a big seller in NZ.

  • Tim Michie,

Just taking the opportunity to wish everyone my hope you all can wring out the best of the Christmas season and we're all back here safe and sounding off next year...

But there's nothing small town about Auckland

begging to differ - Auckland has the biggest small town complex in the country.

I love Christmas. And there’s no reason to, really. Except that I love my family dearly, and I love seeing them. There’s always good natured shouting, and disbelief that whoever you’re talking to, really has not got a handle on whatever’s being discussed.

  • ScottY,

My highlight so far this Christmas season has been the discovery of the awesome Kingi Ihaka version of the 12 Days of Christmas, Pukeko in a Ponga Tree.

My 3 year old loves the line "five big fat pigs" and usually yells it at the top of his voice. Lord only knows what the neighbours must be thinking.

Great holidays to everyone and anyone. Thought I'd share (if it works) our progress and special place over the last couple of months. Totally small town NZ.

  • recordari,

Ahh, another neighbour-ish person. We love that house on Sandringham road. They had a little map in a pouch outside this year, and while I was otherwise engaged, the family trekked around all the suburban light-houses in Mt Albert, Sandringham and Pt Chev, and then voted on the best one.

Not sure who won, but Mr Peel gets my vote. A snow machine!!! What's not to love?

    Happy Christmas everyone.

The Peel family only made it to number 3 in the competition - but there was some pretty stiff competition and they made (as always) a damn fine show!!

Oh, that looks so lovely, Sof. I was so thrilled when I heard that you were going to build the house because it means I GET TO COME AND STAY! But no pressure.

  • Damian Christie,

@Leigh - how did you find the winners on that page? I couldn't seem to see the link.

Anyway, bronze medal or not, I think it's choice that the Peels light up their house each year, you can see the effect it has on the neighbourhood, that main photo I took on the blog says it all, people hanging out with otherwise complete strangers, laughing and enjoying the holiday season. Love it.

Wonder what'd happen if they just kept the lights up all year... ?

  • Jacqui Dunn,

Damian, thanks for this post, and your Christmas spirit. No "bah humbug" with you!

One year I decided to give goats, chickens and other goodies, via my family, to folk overseas. Everyone thought it was a wonderful idea, but I heard later that one of my rellies - French-born, as it happens, and I'm not interpolating anything, I swear - was to be seen later on, stamping her foot and saying, "What do I want with a goat??" I guess she didn't know where she'd keep it.

Yes, I couldn't see results on page either. Thought was just me, but apparently not. At first I thought the 1st house had won, and was about to protest, then realized it was just a list of contestants.

Just rode over to Miller Street. It's lovely, with more of a crazy folk-art feel than Franklin Road -- especially number 58. Feels like the place we live.

    Merry Christmas, all.

A vaguely feral remnant of the 70s? Nah, Pons has far more style than that unpleasant wee enclave.
