The flag non-issue gets trotted out the first week of February every damn year
Quite. Interesting to see the difference in tone this year. Seems not just the Herald that are having a less fiery conversation. Though I'm not conversant with talkbackland, and I imagine actually seeing the Tinorangatiratanga flag flying will inflame a few passions tomorrow.

Oh, I'm sure you're right -- and the usual suspects will be given enough face time to prove the old proverb that it's the hollow drum that makes the most noise.
Still, I have a funny feeling that the "racist and divisive" flag won't flutter over the battlefield of a race war, no matter how much certain people would like it to. Most are going to wake up on Sunday morning and wonder what all the fuss was about -- if they think about it at all.

Kai Tahu have their own flag, and I'll be flying that tomorrow.

Even if you run a pair of old bloomers up the pole, I hope you -- and everyone else -- has a fabulous day tomorrow. Got a house guest up from Wellywood I've not seen for years, and we have a family picnic on Waitangi Day to mark the passing of Dave's eldest sister.

Agree. It's progress.

Same with anthems. Not to say I wouldn't prefer we had a far cooler one of each.
Sacha, NZ has the coolest and most beautiful anthem ever.

By the way, how do you all make the image appear with the link?
-
Totally. How I would love to have been in that crowd.
how do you all make the image appear with the link?
You just paste the link straight into your post without any of the square bracket palaver - just make sure it has the http and the www and PAS does the rest. I wish we could do the same with static pictures, not just YouTube.

When Paul Hopkinson torched the NZ flag, he was known to be a member of the Worker's Party. Tame Iti, who reputedly shotgunned a NZ flag in protest, is apparently a card-carrying Leninist.
If someone torched the Tino Rangatiratanga flag, they'd probably be slapped with the Klan/NF/BNP/NSDAP label.
If someone torched both flags at once, what would that make them? Anarchist? Terrorist? Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere? Otherwise?
-
Confused?

Where do you get these cards?

And what do they have on them?

Sort of related to flags...
John Key told off the Harawiras and yet is seen being held tightly by Titewhai.
If there's any criticism of the govt he just goes into damage control and tweaks things.
He actually made quite a funny joke today when praised for his Te Reo. "Now I'm working on my English."
Hamlet says "That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain—". But I don't think he is a villain.
I'm a metaphorical card carrying member of the Bleeding Heart Liberal Party but damn it, there's something likeable about Key. He's the typical boy who tried to please everyone but ...

Ah, the old fashioned way.
At the presentation of the Elsie Locke's biography last year somebody pointed out that some of her best pictures had been taken by the SIS.

I'll do a casual survey of flag face paint at the Waitangi Day drinks in Kings Cross tonight and update you all on see where popular opinion is trending amongst drunken expats

I trust I am not alone in seeing the impetus for flag-changing as essentially being a branding issue, facilitating the tourism industry and casting kudos upon the incumbent Misiter of Tourism, Mr John (Aw shucks) Key.
Our flag brand is not suffciently differentiated from Australia's (and I suspect that in their own bland ways John Key is barely distinguishable on the world stage from Kevin Rudd) so we all need to be re-branded.
Or is it just me...?

I enjoy vexillology. I'm the Flag Warden of Big O (we have a fullsize flagpole here.) I have a collection of 15 flags, including 5 personal flags concocted by the naybores. Today I flew the Kai Tahu flag; we do have the tinorakatirataka flag (not often flown); the Hunterwasser, 2 specifically Big O flags, and esocterica - like the Lindauder (yep, think bubbles.)
We do not have - nor will I bother obtaining- an official ANZ flag. I truly dislike the design, and nobody round the village has any deep feeling for the thing. I note that whanau overseas tend to use a silverfern* variant or the tino or a Kai Tahu indication - not an ANZ flag.
None of the designs being touted strike any heart-chord as far as I'm concerned, but it is something we need to keep looking for - a flag that proclaims ANZ&proud of it. It'll happen.
*There is an unfortunate link between ferns & death for a lot of Maori. When you mourn, you may wear fern leaves round your head. But there is also the corollary - "Ka mate he tete, ka tupu he tete", which indicates fernfronds can symbolise a renewal of chiefly

I'm with you, Islander. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

I was under the impression that the study of flags and their symbolic imagery depicting the status of a Nation was "Pendantary"
It won't happen overnight, but it will happen.
Ah, the immortal words of one of our brightest exports.

Not study, discussion by pundits. Fussy ones at that.

Despite all the (well-deserved) shit Campbell Live gets, at least they didn't dump the Prime Minister for a skeezy (but awfully sorry) ex-All Black.

I've just seen the story about Brooke's apology vs PM, Craig.
Speaks volumes.

Unfortunately, those volumes are bound back copies of The Truth. Here's the most delightful part of the story.
A former TVNZ news executive said the broadcaster would have dealt the same way with Mr Key's predecessor, Helen Clark.
Oh. So, TVNZ's "news priorities are sleazy, superficial and determined by celebrity PR flacks -- but entirely non-partisan in their unmitigated cretinism? Don't think that's anything to boast about, myself.

I think you're being deeply unfair to New Zealand's most venerable scandal rag, there, Craig.
