  • Konrad Kurta,

Oh, sonofabitch. My age of 26 disqualifies me for everything - cheap Europass rail fares, 'yoof' subsidised things, and just general 'yoof' things... And I haven't driven a car in two years, so I can't even claim the belated, "you're not a boy-racing fuckwit", insurance premiums. You were wrong, Bowie. My girlfriend is still 25; sounds like this could be a good place for her to submit pictures (she's just bought a DSLR and is taking a 'how to' course).

Yeah… “age appropriate"… tricky one eh.

For something to be "Age Appropriate" an "Adult" must approve content that, even though they watched peon when they were 13 and it done them no harm, today's kids must be coddled to the point that they won't notice how those same "Adults" are screwing up everything on the planet for their own benefit to the cost of the next generation.
Heaven forbid a "Wardrobe Malfunction" will taint the purity of their little darlings.
    PAH Humbug...

foster awareness of copyright issues in a constructive way – and ensure most of the material you publish is explicitly licensed for sharing.

An oxymoron if ever I saw one.
Dammit, just Pirate everything and give the Artists some FREE publicity... sod the corporate leeches.

Well yes. Credit where credit is due rather than credit to the leeches.

How do you take Creative Commons as meaning anything other than credit where it's due?

  • Steve Barnes,

    Then why bring it up?.

That's a line I choose to walk as a parent. Children - and teenagers -- are not adults in smaller bodies, and not everything is healthy or beneficial for them to partake or participate in. However, I have to be convinced that something is actively detrimental to my kids' and others' wellbeing -- mentally, emotionally or physically -- before banning it. And often it is a matter of delaying rather than banning.
We also make a point of discussing with ( not talking at) the teens why something doesn't sit well with our values, and listen and take account of their viewpoints .

My main reason for requiring content to be moderated is not so much about censoring what the kids are making and so forth - I just think the support I enjoy from schools and teachers would be short lived if a few little sods decide it would be funny to upload hardcore porn to the site and I didn't spot it for a bit...

  • Hebe, in reply to Damian Christie,

    Yeah that's it exactly.

I didn't mean to imply that I am a censor in most realms; but I don't allow hardcore browsing after school. Vioence and exploitation of whatever kind are what I ban. (Though I am a hypocrite at times and the History channel always seems to be showing war docos round here.)

  • Damian Christie, in reply to Deb Thompson,

You've been such an awesome help Deb, and that film night last year with your Year 13 students' work was a real "aha!" moment - proof that there IS great content out there being made by young people. Up til that point I was quietly worried there might not be :)

77 bugs found and fixed this weekend - which is apparently exactly how it's supposed to go - better to find them now! Hoping to be live by Wednesday for my appearance on Media 3!

  • Judith Turner,

First, well done! As a secondary school teacher and a parent I am happy to see a positive and moderated forum for showcasing the amazing talent that our young people have. If you need help moderating content give us a yell. Your commitment to getting this off the ground is obvious.

It was bloody good of you to agree to come on this week, when I know next week would have been easier.

Hey Judith - thank you - and would love your help/involvement. Fire me an email to damian at urs.net.nz (mind the spelling of my first name, but I'm sure as a teacher you're good with that stuff) and we'll see what we can do together. Thanks!

  • Ian Dalziel,

    vigor of speech...
Be great if you can divert some of the youthful energy unleashed into a News supply/discussion thread (maybe not the 'Current Affairs" as espoused by "sharp' TV shows...)
    - after all, UPS is merely an emasculated URS...

It has always disheartened me that the young are sold a future, without being able to do real due diligence on what they are 'buying' - we need them engaged in the process of community...

Maybe you/they could create an online Shadow Youth Parliament...

    Have fun with this,
have you thought about the exit (post-25) website?
or do they all get welcomed here
    - Hard News / PAS came about from a similar youthful initiative at BFM...

  • David Hood,

I am going to second Ian's comments with personal example- My daughter is pretty high performing in terms of achievements, but has lately been feeling a bit jaded about doing good school assignments. Talking with her, something that would really suit her engagement with the material is a platform where the putting the polish on could be appreciated by an interested community. Her interests are quite definitely in the analytical research and writing area.

I will add, as a doting father with expert knowledge in technologies used in academic research (and explaining them) if I can contribute anything useful to building such community I am willing to volunteer in it's service.
