  • Ben Austin,

Thanks Russell. Almost as soon as I asked I realised I had not looked that hard and there it was. On a side note having Google Listen and Last.FM on my phone has totally changed my listening habits as it almost gets me to the point where I have a personal radio station, without the need for a computer intermediary. Listen is not the best for searching new non Us feeds though

This is a love song for John & Leisha's mother.
    It's not that easy,
    I might not write another.

(I figure for it to be a classic lyric, then you don't need to say who the performer is :) )

  • BenWilson,

If his name rings a bell it's because he’s the former advisor to the UK’s former Labour government, an internationally renowned expert who was chucked for daring to suggest they base drug policy on the actual harm caused to people, and therefore consider alcohol and tobacco to be more dangerous than drugs like marijuana and ecstasy. Heresy.

I think he's righteous, but my greatest fear in this kind of approach is that it can be used to simply advocate harsher drug policy, and including alcohol and cigarettes in this, rather than what I'd like to see, the relaxation of policy on stuff that's about the same level of harm as alcohol, and using price and advertising controls as the lever rather than the law.

I mean I really don't think anyone should be banned from smoking tobacco completely, there's way too many addicts for that. But if it was priced so that it totally discouraged kids, then it might just fade away as society's laziest extreme sport. As for alcohol, I guess the aim would be to have excises that pretty much covered the cost of cleaning up the mess it creates. Same could go for cannabis, painkillers, and various minor uppers, possibly including coffee. We can leave to another day what to do about the likes of heroin, meth, coke, LSD.

    Where there's a swill, there's a sway...
Well, Banks does have a track record in the public drinking and entertainment area...

In his career before entering politics, Banks worked as a market researcher in the pharmaceutical industry, as a commercial property developer, and as a restaurant owner. He served for a time as Chairman of the New Zealand Licensed Restaurant and Cabaret Association.

Though for a younger person nowadays a CV like that would probably describe a different, and more debauched, arc...

I'm not sure why you include LSD there, since it ranks lower on Nutt et al.' index of harm than cannabis (and therefore lower than tobacco and alcohol too).

  • Damian Christie,

(I figure for it to be a classic lyric, then you don't need to say who the performer is :) )

I'd love to agree with you, but I can't. I don't know a number of the bloody lyrics quoted above as though everyone is supposed to know them :) Also, I'm a bit of a shocker at actually working out what the lyrics are in the first place, not to mention seeing them in isolation...

    - molten toothpaste was a good example, I had to google that before going "oh of course."

    Could just be me.

But if you haven't said who the band/singer is (and preferably the name of the song too), ya ain't gonna win, even if I do know where it comes from.... because it'd be nice if other people who are even less informed than me could say "wow, what interesting lyrics, I must listen to that song I've never heard of by Blam Blam Blam...".

So if you fit that category, and want to win, feel free to repost your entries. And the other thing is, the best idea, if it's awesome, could actually end up as a t-shirt, so it would help if I didn't have to put on my Sherlock Holmes hat to work them out!

  • Damian Christie,

@Ben - yeah, I agree that I'd prefer liberalisation in some areas to simply lumping alcohol and tobacco in the banned basket. I think Nutt's point is more that we should look at all these drugs objectively, and treat them in relation to the harm they cause. I don't think he's necessarily saying where the illegal/legal line should be, because that's always going to be somewhat arbitrary and depend on the individual's view on how such things should be treated.

Of course as a psychologist, he might personally be of the view that no (recreational) drugs are good drugs. I mean, they all cause harm with questionable objective benefit.

is from A Thing Well Made, by The Mutton Birds. Which also has a euphonium solo, for an additional dose of awesome.
