It's quite funny how that Winston blog slags of the media, yet it's basically another case of a writer interviewing theuir keyboard.
Still, he'll have plenty of time to write indepth, well-researched pieces after the election, when Doug Kidd's prediction that "NZ First will be dog tucker" does eventually occur.Re: Headless Chickens, it's the Fiona line-up, going from what I've read elsewhere. No Michael Lawry either, apparently.

The local iTunes Store now sells ($24.99 for recent releases, $12.99 or $9.99 for catalogue titles) or rents ($6.99) movies. The sales chart is presently topped by the witless 2007 action flick Shooter. It will have the so-easy-to-spend-your-money iTunes smoothness, but I'm not yet moved to go and buy the cable that lets me plug my iPod into the TV. Apart from anything else, I already have a very good device for playing digital video into my television: the Playstation 3.
But if you have an Apple TV you can rent or buy in HD - which effectively means I have a new box in the corner for no extra cost. And even at this early stage there are some interesting options: All The President's Men, The Missouri Breaks and the fantastic The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. They are a third the cost of a Blu-Ray disc to purchase (and actually none of those are on Blu-Ray yet) and only a fiver to rent. I can see myself renting one a week, easy.

I support DPF’s right to blog on the Braun-Elwert death.
OK, he inevitably opened the door for the extreme posters on his site to get all tacky, but a blog isn’t really a blog if the story of the day can’t be mentioned because of what might happen next. And, unlike Whaleoil etc, his blog has some good stuff on it.
But, like Russell, I can’t understand why he doesn’t just ban people for dragging it into the gutter.
Anyway, those demerit points seem a bit cheesy to me

Plugging one's ipod into the TV is a great idea badly implemented. Before we got a decent portable media player thingy, it's what I did from time to time.
To start with, ipod will only play certain kinds of mp4 video, which means that if you have a bunch of avi files, you'll need to convert them before the ipod will play them. This isn't too hard but it takes special software and ages, and can leave the audio out of sync with the video.
The major problem, though, is that at least on ipods bought in 2006, the screen resolution is half that of a standard television, and that's how it outputs to telly. The result is watchable but not all that enjoyable. It's good enough when for one reason or other the media player won't co-operate, but not worth investing in extra cableage.
On the positive side, a few good telly episodes on the ipod can be really handy when travellling and stuck on a plane or ferry.

We got Freeview last weekend, and I was totally going to watch 'live' for the first time ... but, um, the actual Olympics was on :-)

It is sad but not surprising that at least one blog and many commenters (not here) are unable to work out what to say, or not say, when there is a personal tragedy. I certainly can't be bothered to waste my time explaining "humanity lesson one" to such people, who are rumoured to be adults.
But that doesn't mean the rest of the media have to grant these wretched people a status and respect they do not deserve. And yet they do. I've seen WhaleOil cited as a source (without any criticism or even caveat) by the Listener (Bill Ralston), Newstalk ZB and probably others.
As long as journalists are prepared to pick up whatever flows out of the sewer, and multiply its audience many times over, then they can hardly be amazed that the shit just keeps getting worse, even in death. Why would the turd-throwers stop? It's working. (And the journalists aren't, which is presumably the incentive).

'Cause he needs them and, IMO, doesn't always mind their gutter commentary, particularly if it saves him from saying it. His commentariat are so predictable, he can't be surprised that the bile flows almost irrespective of his introduction. Either he wants them or doesn't mind them; either way, pretending he's got no responsibility is ridiculous.
I noticed his commentary on Georgina Beyer also. It's typically tactless. I find it remarkable that a woman such as Georgina isn't in demand in the public and private sector. Labour has dolled out some prizes to total hacks, but I read Georgina's comments as a pretty genuine offer to continue to provide a public service, not a special plea for a sinecure.

Or opening night cocktails at the Aotea Center when the opera rolls into town? My point is that what happened yesterday wasn't (as far as I can tell) "extreme sports" gone bad, or even worse, like recent cases we've seen of miserably unprepared people all the way out of their depth.
Braun-Elwert, from what I've been able to gather from friends who are heavily involved in the outdoors, was an absolute professional -- he wasn't an irresponsible thrill-junkie who took dumb risks with his own life, or those of others.
Look, kudos to Helen Clark for keeping fit. And also bloody sensible of her to take time to get out of her own head and focused on physical activity and the world around you. Even a good, long walk every day is a great way to detox the bullshit.

I fear I've made him sound like some globetrotting backpacker. He was a psych nurse, often on crisis intervention, which is a whole other sort of adventure.
You can hear the sampled sounds of some of his patients in Headless Chickens recordings -- most notably, the call at the beginning of 'Expecting to Fly', which was a guy called Willie the Whoop. They were always recorded, as Michael Lawry noted at the funeral service, with respect for who these people were.
There are other people who've lost much more than me in Michael's passing, but I was really moved by the service. And nary a hint of religiosity.

Are you suggesting Fiona's era be ignored for a reunion show? Their biggest hits came from this period. Flying nun's first (and only?) number 1 single. Not to mention one of the Nun's biggest selling albums.

On the Fiona and Rupert question, it's really just a personal preference. I know that Body Blow and George were big sellers, and I enjoyed those shows at the time, but the line-up with Rupert E Taylor on co-lead vocals with Chris Matthews was something else. That's the Stunt Clown era.
