  • Simon Grigg, in reply to Paul Williams,

TV crews and getting in the way was what Key did last time - I hope it's not so this time around.

A leadership role - like Bligh's - would be valuable but I'm doubtful he could find it in himself to walk away from the temptation of the those network news bites.

  • Simon Grigg, in reply to giovanni tiso,

I thought those 'what the fuck are you doing here' looks last time and people clearly and visibly unable to get on with the job because of the crews last time, spoke volumes.

  • Gareth Ward,

Glad to hear my family all came through OK, but my cousin who is the Head Nurse (IIRC) at Christchurch Hospital will not be having an enjoyable evening I suspect...

Dad has just walked in the door, thank heaven. We have power where we are in Halswell, if anyone needs it send me an email otagoite2002@yahoo.co.nz . Do not give a shit about politics right now tbh.

Of course if he stayed in Wellington and sent someone else, you’d be complaining too. Stick to the human side of this will you, it’s making my already fragile stomach even queazier.

If you had just seen the fly by on TV3, maybe whether the Prime Minister was there or not would be put in it’s proper perspective.

  • TracyMac,

Yeah, this sniping at the PM is a bit ridiculous, frankly. Imagine the outcry if he DIDN'T turn up. I'm no fan of the man, but he's doing his job.

Not if he'd sent Paula Bennet, you know, the Welfare Minister. Would have shown "good delegation skills" but hey...
I'm not telling you what to think, just telling you how I feel.

The TV3 feed is playing live here. That's what the world is watching, via ABC. I'm as traumatised by the human side as anyone which I guess is why I commented. I'd like to see the human side attended to with priority.

You would wish Paula Bennett on Christchurch?

  • recordari,

Since we are all decent people, lets just assume we're all a bit emotional. I certainly am.

    The thing that got me first, not necessarily most, was on the radio when a person called in and asked if he could make a community announcement;

"Just a message to all the parents of room 5 at the Rudolph Steiner school on the field trip. All your children are fine".

  • Deborah,

I'm a bit emotional, and I could do without the political sniping. Please. Or take it over to the other thread. Please please.

Can we have some clarification as to what is meant by "5.20 pm: There are reports that Brighton and Lyttelton are "unliveable"."
I hope they don't mean "Unsurvivable"

University seems to have survived ok. Very shaken up this time though- considerably more damage- and all just at the wrong time.
Chch looks so sad. And Lyttelton. :(

I'm mostly just finding it hard to deal with the idea that people will clearly be pulled away from hugely essential work while this visit happens.

    As they will.

Of course if he stayed in Wellington and sent someone else, you’d be complaining too.

Actually - no. 24-48 hours later may have been more appropriate that's all.

Blood supplies will likely be needed. Please do donate if you can.

The NZ Blood Service have posted this on their Facebook page:

News media is incorrectly reporting that the Blood Service needs donors now. This is not the case. If and when we need donors we will let you know through Facebook and our website. Please spread the word that this is the case and we'll let you guys know if the situation changes.

Mistruths spread quickly. For the sake of our pals in Christchurch, please verify any serious info before tweeting or posting.

At a time like this any distraction helps. Sitting at a keyboard telling people to worry does not.
If you want to help, give blood, stay off the phone, volunteer, give advice to those that ask, question your leaders as to how this was possible in a City that has recently been through an earthquake and hasn't even started recovery. This is not political sniping, this is politics.
ETA. OK, forget the giving blood bit.

Massive points to the Dean of the Cathedral who has quite possibly lost his important building but has said it doesn't matter and it's only making sure people are ok that counts.

This isn't politics. This is a massive disaster. The Prime Minister has just been on TV1 saying 65 people have died. Talk politics all you like, but please don't do it here.

6.03pm: Death toll confirmed at 17 so far by Civil Defence director John Hamilton. Hamilton is briefing reporters at the Beehive bunker now.
