  • Russell Brown,

And one more from the archives:

Fiona has scanned and posted a hugely important Listener feature from August 1981, in which Tony Reid and Phil Gifford reporting from the Springbok tour find a country "unrecognisably changed, angrily divided and threateningly alien."

  • Hadyn Green,

Ghostfunk: Ghostface Killah mixed with vintage African funk, high-life, and psychedelic rock music. It's been on high rotation since I got it (yesterday).

You, beat-lovin' lady, need to open your digital wallet and get yourself some local hip hop in that @peace record.

    Just sayin'.

OK since it's Friday, I have a very cool music-sciency video to share: make your own dancing alien blobs!! Srsly.

  • Luke Williamson,

Can anyone give me a quick rundown of what the different formats mean for the @peace download. It sounds really beautiful and I want to to purchase but not sure what each is, other than MP3. Is it just bigger file is better?
Skip that request - I just found the explanation on the site.

FLAC is - give or take - about 4 times better than 320 (it equals CD quality, essentially). Worth it, if you can afford the bandwidth and want higher quality. For most listening purposes 320 is plenty sufficient. v0 is a variable bitrate mp3 (at the highest setting, ie a variable version of 320; a bit smaller in file size, but with similar performance). Not too familiar with the performance of the others formats.

    Recommendations, in short:
    For hifi? FLAC
    For iPod? 320

I really enjoy these Friday columns. I love the new music I hear through them. Here's an NZ one I found through National Radio a month or so back - Sheep, Dog & Wolf - Ablutophobia

  • Joe Mahoney,

I'm looking forward to a quiet hour or so to enjoy that @peace album. In the meantime, my pick for one of the best records to come out of NZ is "Little Death" by Steve Abel. Here's a vid of him singing a wonderful duet with Kirsten Morrell.

How on earth did they get into my old student flat to film that music video?

Russell, have you or the Cactuslab boys changed the timeout on the blog? Normally, I leave the pages I’m reading open for days without having to relogin but today it’s happening every time I come back to it. Chrome on Win7. And not just HardNews, but all the PA blogs.

The upgrade this week -- which will deliver the much-requested "jump to first unread comment" feature, among others -- has been throwing up an array of bugs.

This one might take a little longer to resolve because the CactusLads are at Bar Camp Auckland all day, but I've passed on the report.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I need to talk up Ben Sollee, a US celloist who is doing wonderful things in a folk/pop blend. This is an official video:

But watch the same thing live and you’ll see him treating his cello a bit like a bass guitar.

The guy is also an activist against the crazy mountaintop coal mining where they blow the whole top off the mountain and push it off into the valley to get to the stuff.
