Yesterday, a Media, Entertainment and Artists Alliance newsletter was sent out to NZ members about The Hobbit. It went out on MEAA letterhead, directed attention and requested comments to the union's Australian site, email address and freephone number – which can't be called from NZ.
The newsletter contains a Q&A on the situation around The Hobbit. Its massage job on the facts is as good as could be purchased in any number of parlours here or in Sydney, but without a happy ending.

On Campbell Live last night, Simon Whipp was asked, “If The Hobbit doesn't get made in New Zealand, will you carry any guilt with you?”
“No,” he said. It was a brutally honest admission, but not one that should have come out of the mouth of anyone – Australian or otherwise – claiming to represent the interests of any section of the NZ industry.
NZ Equity members need to look long and hard at how well they are served by being a part – autonomous or otherwise – of an overseas-based union whose interests are not always in line with their own.

WB would only consider the boycott was lifted when they had notice from all the unions that supported it, and gave notice to their members a susch, that the ban was llifted.
So until that took place then they would consider teh boycott was still in effect.

A lot of the totally illegally sentenced Parihaka people were sent to Dunedin. Quite a few of then died there. Kai Tahu have maintained a relationship (because we did what we could) with Taranaki/Parihaka ever since.

Peter Conway, CTU vice-president(?) Clear, composed, put the CTU's case forward. Very positive to everyone involved. Admitted problems happened, but put the focus on wanting to keep the Hobbit in NZ and what the CTU did to help. Refused to get engaged in conspiracy theory/tax break, attack type stuff. All round very good job. Said exactly what he needed to.

He is one of the best creators of atmosphere and emotion around today,
He's like Terry Gilliam..but with the compromise. I found fuel for comparison between CGI fiestas The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Lovely Bones. One of these films hooked me into the experience, the other had me thinking "wow, how did they do that?". "Wow how did they do that?" does not necessarily a good movie make...and yet these days...we're a long way past Mean Streets.
His last good film - insofar as this person is concerned - was "Heavenly Creatures".
Bingo! His works have become increasingly laboured. I sense that as a hangover of LOTR he's come to over rely on labor and effort as substitute for raw inspiration. Nothing against the P-man, he's still got it, but how much he lets it shine through seems to be a matter for the committee.

I haven't yet seen "In Spring, One Plants Alone", but I must. I've only seen Vigil, The Navigator, What Dreams May Come and River Queen.
And yes, he is an auteur, and I would like to see all his work. Visually stunning and atmospheric, his films are an experience that wraps around you like a blanket, like a fog, like love. Beautiful.
I think his sympathy with this land, its culture and people would be ideal for Parihaka. I'd love to see him do a film about this area, too - Gilbert Mair and Te Kooti near the end of the Maori Wars, for example.
I have great love and respect for Peter Jackson, too, though I've not seen TLoR. The last film I saw of Jackson's was Heavenly Creatures, which I loved. It is without doubt a great film. But my faves, to date, are still Brain Dead and Meet The Feebles. (Oh look, a left wing reporter). Sick. :D -
