  • Isabel Hitchings,

Bowie's been rumoured for the BDO so many times that I am not holding my breath especially as he's done little to no performing since his heart-attack in '04.

    Would be fabulous but...

  • Jose Barbosa,

"The song was inspired by an episode in which Iggy Pop, during a drug-fuelled period at Bowie’s LA home, hallucinated and believed that the television set was swallowing his girlfriend." via wikipedia

  • Jackie Clark,

If DB did headline at the BDO, I may just very well be tempted into going.

  • JoJo,

Re: Wellington restaurants - I recommend Floriditas, in Cuba Street. Fabulous food, reasonable prices, good staff. Can get a bit noisy, with polished wooden floors, but that's my only gripe.

  • Hadyn Green,

where should I take my mum for lunch in Wellington tomorrow? I'm thinking: special without being overbearingly flash.

I'll be taking my Dad to Sweet Mother's Kitchen for lunch tomorrow for those reasons. He also wants me to take him to Watusi (he found their MySpace page, bless him), so we'll be there on Saturday night after WOW.

Also good: Floriditas, Duke Carvell's and Scopa

  • Danielle,

I'm curious, now: what was on their list? 'Computer Games'? 'Are Friends Electric?' 'Autobahn'? (Actually, half of Kraftwerk's catalogue?) 'Video Killed the Radio Star'?

If David Bowie comes to the BDO there's going to be one pretty damn pregnant person at it...

But while I have your hardy attention: where should I take my mum for lunch in Wellington tomorrow? I'm thinking: special without being overbearingly flash.

My go to Mum restaurant is Floriditas.

  • Carol Stewart,

    I'll second Floriditas.
Cafe L'Affare, opposite Moore Wilsons, is pretty unbeatable for Wellington ambience. Could be a little hectic for a civilised lunch with mother tho.
And Nikau cafe in the city gallery has apparently just reopened. Their kedgeree is worth a major detour.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I recently had dinner with my parents at Floriditas. Superb parent-friendly food, but holy crap, it can get noisy in there with all the hard surfaces. I've enjoyed parental nomz at Sweet Mother's Kitchen, but that's a bit more of an informal eatery.

    Also:

My darling and I take off in a few hours to enjoy a weekend in Wellington attending the World of Wearable Art Awards

OMG, me too, etc. In fact, I'll be there with Miss Kowhai and Miss Johubris. It's going to be good.

  • Danielle,

Oh, Eric B. and Rakim, 'Microphone Fiend'; Blondie's 'Hanging on the Telephone'; Bowie's 'Always Crashing in the Same Car', that incredibly obscure band's 'Happiness is a Warm Gun'... if I YouTube clipped everything I'm thinking of this thread could get unwieldy pretty quickly.

  • James Butler,

I'm not going to post a link, but the best song about technology ever is clearly every track on Computer World.

Also +1 Floriditas - nice crockery too.

For the Germanically-impaired, "Alle zusammen" means "all together". And Klebstoff is aus Deutsch for glue.
That's very good. No sense of humour indeed.

  • Danielle,

Rose Royce, 'Car Wash'! Erm, The Doobie Brothers, 'Long Train Runnin''. John Denver's 'Leaving on Jet Plane'. Golden Earring's 'Radar Love' (sort of). C. W. McCall's 'Convoy'.

(Oh my lord, the train and car songs. I think if you started doing all kinds of transport technology you'd be here for an immensely long time.)

  • David Hood,

I nominate the Peptides cover of Peter Shilling's "Major Tom", which has a space capsule.

“Would you like David Bowie headlining the Big Day Out next year?”

Will he be singing the Concords' ‘Bowie'?

That would be quite an incentive to get along.

  • Sacha,

And Nikau cafe in the city gallery has apparently just reopened.

If you can ever get in. I thought the service at Floriditas was marvellous and it wasn't that noisy for me. Maranui (sob) was crazy bustling loud, moreso that L'Affare which seemed a bit busy and dark for a parental venue but damn fine otherwise. Wellingtonistas will know more, I'm sure. Island Bay sounds interesting.

  • Sacha,

I think we can assume Lily Allen will not be performing. Well, not musically anyway.

From the article: "I finish up my dates in March..." BDO is in January, so an on-stage appearance from Lily is entirely on the cards even with her announced departure from music.

I'm clearly going to have to check out Floriditas. Roxy is pretty good.If you go to Scopa, try the hot chocolate.
