Not an Aucklander, then. :)

The Nerves, Hanging On The Telephone (L.A., '76)
That was brilliant. A very young Peter Case in that band.
Of course if we're talking machines then pretty much all of Neil's Trans was about the human interface with machines.
Transfomer man

Am I late to suggest Maria Pia's? It really is quite fabulous. Although I have yet to try Sweet Mama's Kitchen and it's probably better located.
I beat you to it by several hours. It's one of my favourites, and completely different to Sweet Mama's, which is good fun for a gathering of mates on a night out, but not so much for the nice lunch with mum. At Maria's, you can tell it's a family business, you can smell the woodsmoke from what I guess must be a pizza oven somewhere, and it fills up all the corners of a lovely old house in a unique and quirky sort of way. And the food, my god. Italian but in the "what's that interesting vegetable" sense, not the red sauce and cheese sense.

The Body Electric - Pulsing
Of course! -
Charles Manson - Mechanical Man
Marilyn Mansons' dad and also not very good...

I love Transformer Man, good pick. A song about technology and embracing technology at the same time. Possibly in my top 5 Neil Young songs (and I'm not being sarcastic, people who don't allow themselves to dig Trans are missing out!).

Two very different 'technology' offerings:
OMD - ElectricityRadiohead - Airbag

Exactly. Trans was Neil's response to the personal tragedy of having 2 sons born with Spinal Bifida, the 2nd son confined to a wheelchair and not being able to communicate except by machine (computers).

Thanks for all the restaurant tips.
We went to Floridita's, but it was way too noisy and crowded, and it turned out Mum had never been to the Matterhorn (at least not in it modern guise), so we back down Cuba St and went there. That worked very well.
(Also: I chose a glass of the Pegasus Bay Bel Canto dry riesling -- an unusual and impressive wine.)

Since The Mutton Birds song 'The Heater' has been mentioned twice here is a youtube link:

Tony,
Here's my favourite Peter Case moment; a blistering slice of power pop.The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away [Live At The Whisky A Go Go, 1981]

I demonstrate Darroch's Law with this tune about Lily Allen's attitude to file-sharing (courtesy of Simon Grigg).

@Peter Darlington: for an extra layer of technology, how about Transmission performed on a *truck*? (Courtesy of some kind PASer linking this vid months back - sorry, can't recall your name, but thanks!)
-
Without wishing to Darrochise the thread, I see that as part of her implosion Lily Allen was getting some flak for hypocrisy (or possibly just cluelessness) over respecting copyright and file sharing.

Cool. I've got to check out the Sneakers sometime.

Russ you Aucklanders are officially wimps when it comes to a proper climate. I remember cycling to school in Auckland (Lynfield College if you want to know) and when the temperature was bellow about 15C you would see people decked out in hat, scarf and gloves. I was born in Scotland and we moved to Auckland from Dunedin.
Here in Dundee it was 13C when I stepped outside at 7am for a run, clad in split shorts and a technical tee. Light SW wind (think NW for NZ) and I could easily have done it in a singlet would have been less sweat. When we go out later I will NOT be wearing a coat, in fact I will not even be taking a coat, an umbrella, but no coat. It's not October yet.

Heh - Peter, I grew up in CHCH and Oamaru/Moeraki/Dunedin. We really *did* break the ice on puddles and in the gutters with our bare feet (because we liked the tiny crunchy explosion.) (And we hated not being barefoot.)
To this day I have wonderful feet! And no susceptability for chillblains.

Singlet, Ashby? Luuuxury.

Actually, I grew up largely in the South Island. If you forgot your PE gear at school, they'd still make you run on the frozen grass. Playing littlies rugby on frosted grounds was kind of memorable too.

And doubtless there were girls with spray tans, skimpy tops and heels abroad at the weekend too.
But in Wellington t'other day, it was 8 degrees with a 40km south-easterly, while it was 18 in Auckland. I think I have a case for saying that Wellington was bloody cold at the time.

Discouraged a kicking game, for sure.

Peter, Islander, Rustle... I have to pull rank on you all here and point out that I am from Canada .

Yep, double digit negatives ends that snow-pissing match.
