Best results, Emma, Neil-
re stuff travelling to the Auckland rehab unit - I am happy to pay for a wonderful natural sculpture - this is a large hunk of nephrite jade, sourced in China (with all permissions by friends John Edgar & Murray Gray, given to me, loved by me & whanau- ) to travel to the rehab unit. I'm not in the least New Agey - but poenemu is *good* to stroke...
And I'll buy a copy of Andris Apse's wonderful latest book - meditative iconic (truly!) ANZ landscapes - and send that (let's see - that's just 2 nephews to be sold so far) - and let Sofie, David, Jo, Chris choose a couple of life-enhancing landscapes they'd really like there. And then I'll rev up the Big O community, and we'll get these framed and send 'em.
No worries!
And all best to Sofie for keeping stuff going, and for Russell for making things happen.
(Off to tell the nevvies' mothers about what I intend to do-
(the injoke is: I have a lot of nephews - but only 2 nieces: I have a lot of grandnephews - but only 1 grandniece...and I love 'em all. I *really* wouldnt sell 'em, really truly.
I'll just sell my Mum's pedigree bichon frise instead eh?) -

You're awesome. It was actually when Sofie informed me last night of your brilliant intentions that I realised I needed to get my shit together and start facilitatin'

Can I thoroughly recommend the LATE sessions if anyone is wavering. Like being here, really, with bods and drinks and music and one of the most amazing museum collections all magical because it's night-time.

Or something like that.) -
You mean even your dog is poetic?

i asked Spiro, John Roughan and Mr Boock if they had thought about the rugby fight in terms of the non-acceptance of violence within other sports. They already thought that I was a wanker but that unfortunately perhaps sealed it for them.
There's also some good ones in league, soccer and basketball as well, plus baseball has some beauts.
And I've seen some ridiculous punchups in the boxing ring.
Basically any team sport where the teams touch each other or throw something at each other has issues for some reason ;)
Women seem to have it a bit more under control though our school girls rugby team had an almighty all in punchup two seasons ago involving spectators.

I never get to watch Media 7, because I am out on Thursday nights and I generally don't watch much T.V. which means I never watch repeats. However, I was interested enough in the rugby discussion to get home and tune in and watch it. I've had a bit of a think, and I have to say I was very disappointed in the episode.
Spiro Zavos is an excellent journalist, but he lives in Aussie, has done forever, and when it comes to talking about the particulars of New Zealand rugby (and Sky TV) it was clear he knew less about which way the wind is blowing here than my mother, who hates rugby but somehow manages to astutely call the trends.
Richard Bock was also a little disappointing. His comments reflected the view of the main centre media that is closely aligned to the professional "establishment". In particular, his comment along the lines that more and more top flight rugby leaves the punter simply seeking the caviar and champagne clearly flies in the face of the phenomenal growth of interest the ANZC, which to me points to an over-exposure and rejection of the professional layer in this country.
Given that the whole professional rugby establishment (including the big city media) seem to either missed completely or are in denial of the disconnect with the fans going on the commentators selected made the discussion a boring recitation of recieved wisdom and unlikely to pose thought-provoking questions. Why did Media 7 not get a long time provincial rugby commentator like, say, Mike Bills on the show - someone more likely to challenge than regurgitate the establishment position?
Maybe more would have come from the show if the whole hour had been devoted to the topic. Media 7 seems to be a format that is more suited to a radio program than a TV show?
-
I catch up with Media7 after the fact, when I can. Often watch certain segments rather than the whole thing.
I respect your interest, Tom, but if they wanted to devote an entire show to talking about rugby coverage, then that's one less viewer here. More than enough wall-to-wall sports commentary elsewhere, surely.
-
Some nice images in that open souls video, good work, nice track too.

Oh I agree with you. My comment was more in relation to the general structure of the discussion, which seemed more akin to a hour long RNZ documentary than a punchy TV piece. Slow to start, and just when it started to get interesting, it was off to a new topic.
-
That's how it goes. I would recommend you go along to a Wednesday taping, to see how spontaneous the conversations are. It is just so great to have such a programme on TV.
-
Can I suggest this great viewing in Auckland as my Saturday ideas. It says one night only but I was told and have confirmed it's on show until friday next week.

Re sport violence, please don't forget the recent choir violence in dunedin - http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/71812/pupils-dealt-with-appropriately-rector
-
Geoff, did your students enjoy themselves at the taping?
-
Sacha: they surely did. Several have become regular viewers of Media 7, one is intending to write a story for Nexus, and one declared that she wasn't going to wash her hand for a week, after greeting Simon Dallow!
Were you there too?
I may well bring another van-load up but firstly I am off to the UK tomorrow, for 3 conferences in 10 days.
-
Been too busy, but I do want to go back as an audience member. Good people.
Go well on the speaking tour.
-
chaps. you definitely need more TROLLS in your community. things are sounding way too comfy here, and keeping the USA at an even comfier arms length even whilst her longest culturo-technological probes have long ago bored deep into your innermost oil-wells can only be bad for your most comprehensive health! Yet still you play fast loose and ever-so-cute with 'culture' ..if i didn't know better, i'd just go transliterate a Maori RIGHT NOW!
-
How about that weather, then..
-
Gone from spring NE -ters to SW bleak here Sacha- but hey, sounds like Emma is pulling through very well so who cares about underbridge life?
-
Must be time to go wash my hair.
