Sorry that there are no more videos from the Word Christchurch evening: I was getting my book signed by Roger (and Bruce Russell - squeee!) at the time.

Whoops. Left out this quite brilliant thing:
An Oral History of “We Built This City,” the Worst Song of All Time
-
You’ll also note a special comeback from those rascals King Loser.
Worth checking out the KL interview from Music 101: King Loser - '16 Comeback Special. Two shows in Chch: Darkroom, Sat 10th - $20 door sales only - and a 'matinee' performance at Log Recordings on the Sunday.
I hadn't realised Celia managed Into The Void - and had sung with The After Dinner Mints 'in pub residencies, at racehorse launches and champagne breakfasts'. More on KL at Audioculture.

We Built This City may be the worst song of all time (personally I'd vote for Peaceful Easy Feeling by The Eagles) but it does translate to Auckland quite well:
We built this city...
We built this city on vol-ca-noes -

The After Dinner Mints on a good night were great fun*. Recently hunted out a grainy interlaced vhs and there was Celia, singing ‘Girl from Ipanema’ (with Ross Humphrey on guitar) at our (rather chaotic) 1990 wedding. Jeez everyone seems so young!
*I don't remember anything more glamorous than dingy half-empty Chch pubs, though - the old 'Provincial' maybe - whatever that venue was called? -

There's an album on bandcamp by Trillionaires who, I have found, did a similar kind of thing - cover versions of popular tunes (albeit in a garage style). They were also Chch based and featured, amongst others, John Christoffels (Terminals), Mick Elborado (Termals, Scorched Earth Policy, Axemen), Malcolm Grant (Builders, The Bats). It's here:

Same folks, essentially - though maybe the Trillionaires were minus Celia?

The bandcamp page says, "Nicole - Vocal".

of all the vinyl joints, in all the world...
hadn't realised Celia...
...she was but a 'feisty waif' selling records in Real Groovy's first Queen Street store when I first met her, IIRC... Rip It Up deliveries, early '80s...

Grace Jones is playing at Potato Head Beach Club in Bali on 08/10, tempting very tempting.

On the form she's showing in that and other FYF clips, worth a go I reckon.
I'm guessing she's taken some steps with her health – there was a period where she looked overweight and unwell.

The Others Way festival takes over K Road for the second year this evening ...The lineup includes...Salad Boys, Yoko Zuna, Yumi Zouma, Ghost Wave, Kane Strang and more …
Some great S Island on show. Be sure to check out Kane Strang - here's Winded
And the Salad Boys, here's a set they did for KEXP Seattle last year
Joe the SB guitarist is also in Dance Asthmatics and T54. Ben the bassist also in the DAs - though a v different sound. The DAs ain't playing Others Way but here goes the anarchic PG aka Puking Ghost from Cassette Store Day in 2014
Cassette-only releases can be found for Salad Boys, Terror of the Deep (Wgtn) etc over here on Melted Icecream.

Oh, and punters in the garden city may want to catch Hex Waves and Sere, the latter touring the release of their eponymous LP. Followed later in the evening (or slightly overlapping with) that night - if anyone has the energy :-) - at Log Recordings, Danish industrial noise-ist Puce Mary.
Here's Sere with Hazy

Thanks for this! Will see whether we can go. Where's Log Recording? Seen a number of gigs listed there but never managed to work out where it is in town.

EE,
I like a good ranter. That is why you have my vote as Waitemata Council member.

Since this is the Friday music thread, and I don't think it's been mentioned previously, fans of dubby dadtronica might like to know that 'Pitch Black' are back in action after a nine-year pause, and have just released a new album.
They're back in NZ over your summer and are playing a couple of festivals: Northern Bass on December 30th, Rhythm and Alps on December 31st and Sundaise on March 10th.
I saw them play in Hackney a few weeks ago and they were really rather jolly good.

Mark, it's at Unit 9, 48 Lismore St, behind the AMI, as in Jade(d), stadium in Waltham. A suitably industrial space. Not quite visible from the street, go through (normally open) sliding iron gates, then a dog leg to the right. It sometimes doubles as a gallery plus there's Henry's and Henry's (the core of Log Horn Breed) recording studio adjacent. It's all pretty informal and amicable as you might imagine - and BYO booze!

The Observatory is a fantastic venue in Saigon. Make it there now and then.

Nice. Bill certainly seemed pretty excited about it.
