Thanks for that review Russ. Flume and Nicolas Jaar would've been my must-see acts of that lineup.

Laneway was reported last year in the media as signing up to the waterfront site for another three years.

I can pretty confidently say you'd have loved them both. I've been thrashing the Flume album since. It's great that this sort of thing is hit material.

The Men were probably my highlight, fresh, energetic… kept calling the The Boys by mistake.

Was a great day, I managed from Kings Of Convenience (nice they were too) through to the end of Jaar - usually tired legs and crowd boredom would see me home much earlier
Enjoyed the rocky acts the most - a style of music that suits these big affairs, Cloud Nothings 15 minute rock wig out was most enjoyable in the baking hot sun
Jaar whilst very enjoyable also bored me, a bit, his set would have sat better between DJs (ie no breaks), not as stand alone, lots of cutting elements and bringing them back a la teasing club styles perfectly done to bring on those chemical rushes... I wanted more songs less club as he is more than capable.
The new spaces and added shade was very well done, sucked the bar got closed down and the beer runout just as I needed one too
All up its a real nice day of music which the promoters have done well to improve on year after year in both lineups and venue, well done!

Can I start a movement that says it is OK to grab the smart phone of anyone who holds it up at a concert and throw it as far as you can across the room. Just pay attention to the music and appreciate it instead of trying to get a bad recording of it on your stupid genital extension. Thank you . . . and sorry . . . just need to breathe . . .

Disagree! Even though the sound’s a bit ropey, it’s a good thing someone captured that Pink Frost cover for posterity. And I was really pleased with the video I got of @Peace doing ‘Home’ at last year’s Splore.
Usual caveats apply, of course: don’t impede anyone else, spending the whole gig holding up your phone is lame, etc. But I don’t think it’s a bad thing per se.
Otoh, I barely touched my phone all day at Laneway – I often have no wish whatsoever to be fiddling with a gadget in a setting like that.

It's beyond that now. As Thomas Beagle pointed out on Twitter, the more common response is feel sympathy for people who don't have a smartphone. We'd chuckle kindly last year when Media3's researcher would take out her battered Nokia ...

Nora I second you on The Men, they were my highlight of the afternoon, the difference between cd and live was ace -and they clearly loved playing their rock in the sun, plus Pink Frost sent (ahem) chills down my spine. But kids with phones.... There I was leaving AltJ (because they sounded exactly like the cd) got there early for Japandroids and as soon as they played the first lick got shoved outta the way by a group of kids with earplugs and cellphones. And it kinda struck me, if you're not at Laneways to hear it properly and you only want to view secondhand, why come to Laneways at all? Other than that 8/10

My 2 year old one is still considered a boss device at University. They're not cheap, after all.

So I went to Pretty Lights last night and I’m fairly sure I was the oldest person in the building. But it was great! I wish he’d played a few more of his remixes (only Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’, from memory) and there was a spell in the two-hour set where one filthy great break started to sound like another – but mostly, wow!
Ana, who was upstairs, has a good shot from there that she’ll hopefully share here.
The underlying pics here are rather large because I’m having to post straight from my, er, smartphone.
