  • Mark Harris,

Bad campaign? What election were you watching?

It didn't seem to be the one where ACT improved 135% on 2005.

The one where ACT still polled lower than NZ First and, without tactical voting by National in Epsom, would be cast alongside NZF on the dustheap of history. And, trust me, that is the nicest thing I can say about ACT

"ACT improved 135%" - and still ended up within the margin of error for most opinion polls, in case you're tempted to claim a greater mandate than is warranted.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Bad campaign? What election were you watching?

In 2005? The one where ACT was reduced to a caucus of two. Pretty crappy result, any way you squint at it. Sorry for not making that explicit.

It is of course, the margin of error for a party with exactly 50% of the vote. For a party polling about 4%, their margin of error is only about 1.3%

Don McGlashan should try reading the fine print before signing contracts, I guess. But that's funny -- Chris Trotter slapping down those uppity niggers one more time (which seems to have disappeared from Stuff) is anything but.

Except that it ain't in the fine print. APRA does blanket deals with broadcasters to allow incidental music to be used on the stations. Most acts are fine with this but stretching that to include tacit political ties is something that has caused problems in the past and is being addressed elsewhere on the planet.

I think Don owns his own masters and may have a redress for the misuse of those if that is the case.

I managed to get TVNZ many years back when they used a recording of mine to promote a TV special. Blanket agreement with the industry body they said....I'm not a member said I....

It may not be "nice" but I can see that the fun has already begun. I am really looking forward to JK managing this.

It'll be even more interesting to see how Rodney, Roger and FedFarm would react if the EU/NAFTA/ASEAN/APEC/G7 were to declare a carbon trade war on us.

  • Stephen Hill,

The incoming National government will completely review the emissions trading scheme (ETS) - possibly including the science that says humans are to blame for climate change

I hope that there'll also be a review of the whole 'Earth is not flat' malarky. I'm tired of having science rammed down my throat when it is patently obvious to anyone with functioning eyes that the planet isn't even a bit curvy. Seriously, this is simply scary and a 'review' will be a colossal waste of time and money. The scientific evidence for anthropogenic climate change is overwhelming. I'm all in favour of inclusive government but you gotta draw a line somewhere - letting people with willfully ignorant ideas about stuff like this dictate policy is just stupid.

I have been trying to read the fine print also, regarding these agreements, and I still don't feel confident to say something nice, but it's not about me.I have tried burying my head in quicksand, I have a sandpit theory somewhere on a thread and so far I don't feel like the stoopid one. Associate this ,that , minister of positions I haven't heard of before and a hurry to sign so Key gets to Peru and onto visit an "old friend" on our expense . I don't think so. It's quick ,so it can't be scrutinised. I see how Key got the name "The Smiling Assassin"

  • Islander,

Sofie, i share your concerns. I dont think, from my family's perspective in the South, that the Maori Party will be useful or effective for us (and o yes! I know all about the various headings they're going into bat for.) I dont know or trust them.

And as for a ravenous little millionaire rushing off to display his shiney new PMship at an APEC meeting - anyone else hear the words 'new world order'?

Well, I sure think Claudette Hauiti should be called in for a "please explain" meeting with TVNZ management. Let's see: If this story is accurate, it sure sounds like she let someone on air who behaviour -- and possible intoxication -- was causing serious concerns. And was not only offensive to other panelists, but was seriously distruptive. Pardon me if I find the outrage four months after the fact somewhat less than convincing.

No. I hear the words 'I'm pretty sure there's a shoulder under that chip'. But hey, I guess if Key had decided not to go then you'd be moaning about the rank amateur who was more interested in showboating at home than representing the interests of the country aboard, and you'd never have seen Saint Helen asleep at the wheel.

I read that article. It was astonishing, and not in the way that Mr Ranapia is trying to spin it, and unlike anything I've seen before. Try the DomPost as the original article appeared there.

What's that phrase? Act in haste, repent at leisure.

This will be interesting to watch.

I *love* that song, but I think that the line 'he don't go to films unless he knows they're arty' is... not relevant. Johnny English, remember? :)

And I'm sure you'll pardon me if I find your assertion that the most troubling aspects of that story are the producer's decision and the timeframe somewhat less than convincing as well...
    :>

These agreements are all well and good - it's exactly how this "good faith" translates to action that matters. If honoured in intent, the Maori Party agreement really heartens me.
Although, I find myself in the contradictory (although not unexpected) position that I hope he delivers on the intent of the agreement with the Maori Party, and ignores the intent of the ACT one. If he is to remain consistent, I can't really decide which way I'd rather it fell...

Actually I wouldn't. I would however ,be interested in him and the rest of the National Party (remember them) showing some interest in the immediate domestic confidence building that he (Key) so carefully painted as an issue needing attention. Or , will NZ be communicating by Video Conference? Also for all who thought Peters was a disaster, McCully looks like fun for Foreign affairs, not.

Gareth: Hey, perhaps it's the standard M.O. at Eye to Eye to put verbally abusive drunks on the air. In fact, it would explain a hell of a lot about why that show so often degenerates into an unwatchable screaming match, with Willie Jackson smirking like all his Christmases have come at once.

Not how Public Address Radio or Media7 rolls in my experience -- where you do the 'instant arsehole, just add liquor' routine afterwards, if you're so inclined.

Mr Dempsey should try picking up a copy of yesterday's Sunday Star-Times, and then walk onto any marae in the country and start throwing around inflammatory and derogatory terms like kupapa. I know Trotter does love to paint himself as a brave contrarian speaking truth to power, but what a bitter and ignorant little piece of trolling yesterday.

For goodness sake, Craig: Claudette Hauiti, who is a very hard-nosed producer, had to make a last-minute call as to whether her programme could go on as planned.

She wasn't the one who turned up drunk and abusive for a televised discussion on paedophilia: that was the man Act drafted in to a high place on its party list.
