  • Russell Brown,

    Okay, here's Sharples' rationale:

“My focus is on how Te Puni Kokiri’s support might achieve outcomes I am responsible for. This bid creates huge opportunities to promote and profile Maori businesses across the spectrum, for example, and new jobs will be created. My Economic Development Task Force is certainly interested.

It's a promotional exercise? How many new jobs for Maori will actually be created in comparison to the conventional use of those three million dollars?

“I would also love to see iwi radio stations broadcasting games live on their networks,

But that's a different set of rights -- one that has increased in price by 700% in the course of the last two RWCs. Who pays for those? How is iwi radio meant to cover the costs of those rights without the infrastructure, expertise, coverage or audience to do so?

and all New Zealanders getting help and encouragement to use Maori words and phrases in everyday conversation.

It's a Maori language development initiative?

The potential returns on this investment are enormous, not just during the month of the Rugby World Cup, but right from the day that MTS secures the bid, into the future,” he said.

Care to quantify them? Along with the commercial risks?

MTS are well placed to deliver. They already have 90% coverage of the country, and with the projected uptake of Freeview in the next two years, plus MTS’s offer to sub-licence, coverage will not be an issue. MTS also has available time to extend their broadcast hours, and a track record of innovative event programming and strong sports coverage.

All well and good. But not a rationale for raiding the TPK piggy-bank to jack up the bid.

“It’s a pity the bid has attracted controversy, but I am well prepared to discuss the merits of the case with the Prime Minister and other stakeholders,” said Dr Sharples

Wouldn't it have been prudent to discuss it with the Prime Minister and other stakeholders before promising the money?

  • Russell Brown,

So how exactly did they (in your words) "embarrass Murray McCully"?

By their mere presence, rather than any words or deeds, it seems to me.

Giovanni Tiso wrote a beautiful post about connecting with his daughter Lucia – who has been diagnosed on the autism spectrum – through the hands-on practice of making pizza. We republished it on Humans.

Are you aware of the work of Sue Larkey. She's an Australian I managed to hear earlier this year and she has great ideas for working with children on the autism spectrum. She's also realistic and practical especially when it comes to working with them in the classroom which is where I'm at at the moment with a couple of mildly autistic kids.

MTV could flog off the rights to Tua's next 3 fights they have so cannily acquired and put the proceeds towards the RWC.

    Sorted.

  • George Darroch,

Giovanni's piece was very very good. Harvest Bird's poetic rejoinder needs to be read as well.

And as someone who makes a very similar pizza, I can recommend his recipe wholeheartedly. Give yourself 2-3 hours on a weekend afternoon, and eat it with people you love.

Maori TV have put out a PR this afternoon responding to media queries.

  • Rachel Prosser,

My initial reaction to this was : Great! MaoriTV is the best free-to-air channel we have at the moment.

They do really good stuff on days like Anzac Day, Code and their coverage is intelligent and extended. They're like TV One used to be in the 70s, before it became a clone of Canadian/US styles.

I think they'd do a great job hosting.

How they fund that is a different issue. Is this a proper use of the $3million? Will it artificially inflate the price? Is it fair play in the market? There I'm not so sure.

As for their charter and mission - I wouldn't be surprised if general awareness/understanding/use of Te Reo increased afterwards.

As for public benefit:it wouldn't hurt that it would provide an incentive for those outside the analogue coverage area to switch to digital TV either (it's going to need some kind of incentive before the analogue signal is switched-off)

  • simon g,

Key slapped the Maori TV bid down at his press conference this afternoon, albeit a trifle tautologically: "I expect my expectations to be met".

His expectation being, everyone can watch the All Blacks win in 2011, before they form a celebratory conga and head to the polling booths.

Pretty much what Rachel P said.

From a coverage point of view, Maori TV would be a massive breath of fresh air.

  • Ross Mason,

Are we a little precious over this? Hasn't the government underwriten the RWC, bought acres in Auckland for a big party? Punted millions into a yacht race or two? What IS it all about when our enthic brothers decide to negotiate a bit of cash to run with the ball?

Sir Howard brought out the memories which included twice (!!) playing "My old man's an all black" on National Radio IN ONE DAY . Jeez worse than the bad old days of HaurakI!

Speaking of cultural and Human Rights. I wonder why they really wrote that song. It was a few decades before NZ took up the cudgels to demand Maori players get to SA. But Howie and the boys knew they were taking a risk even then to comment on such trifles.

Let them take a risk. We might even learn some te reo.

BUT. I missed the film/documentary last night. Oh dear.....I do hope it was someone else (not the rugby negotiator) who inserted that piece of tripe onto the airwaves.

Ross, I think urban liberal Pakeha will be happy to watch the rugby on Maori TV. I certainly would be.

Rural Maori in Northland might not be so keen on missing out. Anyone heard from Hone Harawira on this? :)

    And he's a so-called Doctor of Osteopathy!

You'll want to watch this week's Media7, for the first story up.

I've been doing the research today on a medical story that a lot of other journalists don't seem to have bothered with, and there's quite a mess here from all the spluttering.

I suspect Maori Television would be capable of producing better coverage than TV3's effort with Hamish McKay last time. But that's not the point.

What they're "negotiating" is money that would otherwise go to real development initiatives, whose founders put forward proposals and presented a real case for the economic and social benefits that would flow from the finding they sought.

This is just a raid on TPK's budget.

  • Rich of Observationz,

Should TVNZ be allowed to bid for the RWC? They are after all just as much a state-underwritten, part advertising-funded broadcaster as Maori TV?

If government really wanted the RWC free-to-air at no cost to the taxpayer, they could pass a law preventing such events being shown on pay- or subscription TV. Of course, that would be an interference with the market, and even worse, would take revenue from Big Sport.

  • Matthew Littlewood,

A quick google search yields nothing. Got a link, DPF? I remember cancerous and corrosive, and Winston Peter's calling the Herald treasonous, and Chris Trotter calling Guyon Epsiner treasonous. And people accusing Helen Clark of treason, but the closest I get for Clark herself is Don Brash's uncyclopedia page :-)

Quite. Indeed, I searched "Helen Clark" and "treasonous" in Fairfax's text library, with covers all of their published articles in all of their newspapers back to 1997, and the only mention I could find was Winston's mentioning slur on the Herald.

DPF is being disingenuous. Me, I think he should be more concerned at the way he lets bigots like redbaiter run rampant all over his board.

Re: Maori TV getting the RWC. While it would be nice if they used different methods than the ones implied in RB's opening post, I think they would do a great job of coverage. Nearly every time they've had a big event- whether it's ANZAC ceremonies, Sir Howard's funeral or the election, I've found their style really fresh and non-hysterical. Indeed, their election coverage was quite old-fashioned...in a good way.

I've heard her speak a couple of times. She's is an enthusiast for the teaching and learning of autistic kids and all the diverse ways this happens, and is very child-centred. She comes to NZ quite regularly and is worth going to hear.

One tip of hers I remember. She suggests that to get school principals to understand the autistic child and their need for things to be predictable and unchanging, is to get to school early and park in the principal's car park.
But you would have to be a brave parent to do that.

As Idiot/Savant pointed out here a while back, it's effectively Redbaiter's house. While his talking points never rise above regurgitated Rush Limbaugh, he certainly provides the bulk of the content. Much of Reepicheep's role consists of taking out the boy-curmudgeon's garbage and plumping his pillow.
