  • Russell Brown,

OIC. Both. From oral HPV. Makes sense I guess.

We do, of course, have a good vaccine for that. One Wishart insists no one should take.

  • Tom Semmens,

I'll give you a clue: throat cancer.

    But what a headstone!

  • dyan campbell,

Which person gets it, the giver, or the recipient?

I'll give you a clue: throat cancer.

It's too bad this information was published in David Wishart's Nutball Magazine, because it's true. Also HPV is not the only oral STD that is rapidly increasing, but it's the one we're discussing here.

A Swedish study in the 1970s showed 23 per cent of oral cancers were HPV-linked. By 2006, the number had climbed to 93 per cent.

A completely separate study in the US showed that as many as 80 per cent of oral cancer biopsies were HPV positive, a doubling of the proportion in 10 years.

Both the giver and the receiver of oral sex are at risk of HPV. So are kissers.

    you can get it here

About 75% of adults who have been sexually active test positive to antibodies to HPV. Most cases spontaneously resolve, but a significant proportion don't. Most cases in women are sub-clinical, which is to say, invisible to the naked eye. Many cases in men are invisible until very established.

and you can get it here

You can get it from deep kissing, possibly for
    good reason

This is relevant in New Zealand, and the vaccine should be promoted to be given to boys as well as girls.

  • Rob Stowell,

Sorry if someone has posted this days ago: there's a facebook site for University of Canterbury info, questions, comments on the quake and recovery. Slower than twitter. Lots of activity.
Campus is still closed down- 5pm today there should be a decision whether we'll be open next week.

  • dyan campbell,

And I'm a smoker too. Ah well, thats me well and truly fucked.

No, not necessarily at all. Just like people who smoked heavily from childhood and never get cancer - there is a certain element of the luck of the draw. We can stack the odds by avoiding this behaviour or cultivating that behaviour, but it is (as other conversations have emphatically asserted) to some extent, the luck of the draw.

The last document I linked to "Medical Guidelines etc" shows the number of individuals who test positive for having had an HPV infection at some point is around 75% but importantly most of these infections resolve themselves without any treatment, leaving only antibodies as evidence of their former presence. Lucy Tel-Ber (I don't want to call you Lucy TB!) if you read that doc there are indeed stats for anal HPV infections also.

Most resolve themselves, but some don't, which is why screening is good and denial is bad - HPV moves very slowly... and the HPV vaccine are good ideas. It should be given to boys as well. Pathogens are interesting creatures, shared creatures and we are often unaware how communicable they all are.

  • Jackie Clark,

Thanks for that info, Dyan. Just as well the last BJ I gave was a very long time ago. <looks sheepish, and then can't be arsed>

Nats fail to save jobs in quake zone

The first jobs have already been lost following the Christchurch earthquake. 86 workers have been fired from Kaiapoi New World, which will be closed for a year due to quake damage.

The calculation for the supermarket was easy: ‘we’re not going to be open for a year, the $350 a week from the government per worker won’t cover our labour costs, and we’ll easily be able to hire new people in a year because unemployment is so high’.

The result: 86 workers and their families tossed into unemployment and poverty. they won’t get the miserly $350 a week. They might not even be eligible for the dole if they have a working partner.

Perhaps the calculation was a little simpler: It's impossible to employ anyone when there isn't actually any work because there's no fucking business.

  • ScottY,

Craig, it's simple. Everything (yes, including the earthquake) is National's fault.

Maybe you need a sturdier desk. Could come in handy to hide under when Bill English causes the next quake.

  • Lucy Stewart,

Perhaps the calculation was a little simpler: It's impossible to employ anyone when there isn't actually any work because there's no fucking business.

They do also seem to have missed the bit where the workers get two months' full pay and an offer of work at other Foodstuffs supermarkts if they want to commute or move, which seems like quite a reasonable provision, under the circumstances.

Also, they'll probably be employing quite a few people over the next year or so to get the place back open, but checkout workers and shelf stockers won't be what they need.

As he was on Mediawatch this morning? Made me splutter into my morning cup of tea. What a monumental prat--all big hair and puff!

  • Craig Ranapia,

Is sanctimonious prick Tourette's a recognized neurological condition? What amused me was Dunne bitching about "media vultures" "who'd probably never been to Christchurch before" flying in from Auckland to "posture" with their "false sincerity" -- an anathema I presume Dunne won't lay on the Honourable Members for Helensville and Mt. Roskill.

(IIRC, both John Campbell and Mike McRoberts spent several years in Christchurch. But, hey, don't let facts get in the way of snide bitchiness.)

  • Russell Brown,

I suppose it was a justifiable decision for Mediawatch to have Dunne on to clarify his comments -- but what authority or moral perch did he believe himself to pronouncing from? Who the fuck asked him for his opinion? Bah.

  • Craig Ranapia,

To be perfectly fair, Mediawatch also had a rather useful piece on the challenges facing both TVNZ and Three in getting rolling last Saturday morning.

  • Just thinking,

Missed church, but gave thanks for small mercies at the Dux de Lux, Warners, & Pomeroys this afternoon.

Pomeroys was the first brewry in Canterbury and also the first union labour. Dux the old Canty Uni union & Warners, well doesn't lend itself to (British) unionists.

Warners had a few broken glasses, Pomeroys a few bottle of wine broken and a few bricks missing, the Dux has parts taped off but is operating.

My fave fish n chip shops haven't been so lucky. The Fish Mongers Victoria St & Theos on Riccarton Rd are no more.
