Slightly tangential, but I saw your tweets about the delayed Friday music post interspersed with reference to f*ckery in the UK - this reminded me of a reggae song called 'White man is f*ckery' which pretty much tells the story of white men being dicks as seen via Jamaican eyes. I was given a rip of it in Japan circa 09 by a Jamaican guy with a reggae shop in Tokyo, who had the blank 45 - its catchy like many of that era, but I gather no one wanted to put their name on it. Suffice to say you won't find it on Spotify!

Interesting story there. TVNZ treats its library material as a commercial asset and it's very expensive to buy. The breakthrough came when the keepers of Merata Mita's estate were able to give permission to use footage from Patu!.

Merata's generosity helped NZ On Screen a great deal in its early days. It's nice to know she's helping even now she's not with us.

One also has to wonder why TVNZ prices their footage so high, since one assumes it's not exactly a hot market internationally for NZ news footage.

One also has to wonder why price-gouging occurs when this footage was paid for before TV went commercial. Sure, Westside will be earning revenue, we hope, but I wish we treated our taonga paid for from the public purse and related sources more the way the Americans do.

Because the gummint told them they had to operate in a business-like manner, therefore charging as much as they can. (An alternative theory is that they have made a pig's breakfast out of managing their footage that they put huge fees on it to discourage people from asking for stuff that they can't easily find. That's anecdotal, I have no evidence for it.)

In America, anything generated by a Federal government entity is automatically public domain unless it's specifically classified. Better in some agencies than others and there's an endless battle to get some stuff declassified, but well in advance of our "open" government.

EDIT When I was in the E-Government Unit in the early 00's, we did suggest following the American PD model. Went down like a lead balloon and that was with the relatively light-handed Clark government. Key's ultra-politicised public sector is very unlikely to adopt such a view.

Wow, that survey is so revealing of the misconceptions of the survey designers: I am sure that they will get just the answers that they are looking for :-)

My practice for the last several decades has been to not play music for money.
As for getting down about the "music industry" . . I mean who gives a tuppenny for that crap.

Sadly, I have found 'Westside' vapid, albeit with some good and underutilised actors.
Last week's episode was a ripper though, due in huge part to the music you mention -the fragment of Beat Rhythm Fashion, the infectious glory of the Clean. Liked the footage splicing too- thanks for this and so much more, Merata Mita and those who care for her legacy.

Unless you are SkyTV in which case they'll hand over a whole channel's worth for free to keep the Minister happy. #grrr
