I never had any personal deal with Mallard so I cannot comment on the guy, but I had to endure a flight from Wellington to Auckland with Henare and the guy is a nasty piece of work, he was so condescending, arrogant and up his role (besides being pissed)... some of his words to me are the closest to racism that I have experienced in my 12 years in NZ (I’m from Argentina... go figure).
It was quite shocking for me, because at that time i was helping set up a iwi based oyster farm up north with some of the coolest and loveliest people ever... and this guy was just a fool
So it does not surprises me that someone hit him... the whole incident remained me to the headbut from Zidane to that Italian in the football world cup final... completely out of place and senseless... but good’n’him...

He came on Off the Wire a couple of times and took it way too seriously.
The points scoring in the show was basically a laugh, but the second time he kept his own score to make sure he wasn't being done out victory. On a comedy news quiz where people (shock horror!) know the questions in advance, it was quite odd behaviour.

Was kinda sorta not surprised by any of the names, really. The really interesting one to watch will be Shane Jones - know I'm in the minority on this, but IMO he's been over-hyped and better get over himself long enough to perform well.

Two phrases come to mind:

Interestingly one of the techniques used by Card Sharps is called 'culling' - manipulating desired cards to the top or bottom of the deck (according to Wikipedia).
There ought to have been a cull of the more literal kind - the Mallard population seems to be out of control.

There are a lot of eyes on Shane. He's been groomed for leadership, whether he liked it or not, since birth. And oh, he does like it.
A likeable enough chap though, and as a Taffy Dally Hori having a foot in several racial camps keeps him striving for balance. But as you say, Craig, the sort of personality I believe they call "unconflicted" or "untroubled by self-doubt".

That's diplomatically put. :) A really interesting aspect of political psychology is watching people make the transition - or not - from being very big fish in their respective ponds to runts in the Parliamentary pecking order. And I really hope Jones pulls it off, because he's not stupid, or a disagreeable man (most of the time - when he's tried being a shit-kicker he's just come across as a condescending dick). But what plays at home doesn't necessarily go down well in Wellywood.
Nanaia Mahuta, to her credit, promptly cashed the reality check that she can't coast on her family connections with the Kingitanga, but has had to do the work and pay her dues.

Official version: he made a decision some months ago to concentrate on holding his seat at the next election. (Taupo is very marginal under the recent boundary changes)
Unofficial version - got the boot due to a poor performance in his justice portfolio and for making a pigs ear of handling the Electoral Finance Bill once it was released.

Oh, you mean the future National deputy leader who (if my memory serves) was charged - and convicted of - assault, and has had his nose rubbed in it at every opportunity since? I'd also check the use of the plural and the term 'beating up', rodgerd. While I don't think Gerry's actions were in any way acceptable, I think 'beating up pensioners' or 'throwing an old man down a stairwell' (as one of Kiwiblog's more excitable lefty-readers like to put it) is a wee bit OTT.
Apparently Trevor isn't under such horrible stress that his workload is being reduced - instead he's picked up environment, labour and broadcasting -, and the ballyhoo-ed demotion hardly reached the level of a slap over the wrist with a moist Cabinet paper. No ministerial photo-op in Beijing for Trev next year.

1) Someone took a sideways glance at Benson-Pope and decided that death with dignity is infinitely preferable to being gutted in public. She needs Mallard; Burton, not so much. -

Whoops, to be pedantic, I'm not sure that a private prosecution involves charges being laid. But anyway, here's the Herald report which doesn't seem to back up the delicious picture of Basher Brownlee "beating up pensioners". A wee bit more complicated, though no more palatable in my book.

Interesting to get the facts on the Brownlee case, it was not a pensionerand Brownlee went down the stairs hmmmm does not sound quite so bad does it
