Stephen Bell's write-up on the Lessig speech, NZ needs to protect itself from US corruption: Harvard professor.

I can’t believe I didn’t find time to make more of how active and comfortable women are in these forums, and what a useful influence that is.

The Standard’s Lyn Prentice declared moderation an “easy” job that took him a mere 30 minutes after work each day
Yeah, and that's why a lot of us, especially, I suspect women, don't read The Standard. He is also the dude who is So Very Busy counting his stats and Not Moderating, that he had a whole day to tell me in very many ways how very wrong I was, and why The Standard is, "the biggest megaphone in the blogosphere". So, you know, grain of salt.

There's been a lot of conversations (to make it all about the girls) recently, about how the feminists on the internet aren't very nice to each other. It's been highlighted in Emma's last few posts how it doesn't actually have to be that way, and how people actually can be polite, while still disagreeing. That's all down to you guys as writers and moderators, and it's a really important thing. So, yes, you should have made more of it. :)

"Active and comfortable" is also a description of my exclusive line of branded leisurewear.

I occasionally read it, but don't contribute there any more. I can't be bothered contributing in a place where the first response always seems to be some clown calling me a class traitor.

Indeed - speaking as a bloke I guess a measure of your success is that I take it for granted the contribution made by teh women’s XV et al.
On a sadder note I’d finally plucked up courage to go to an OGB and got permission, but you put it on a Thursday – conspiracy I say !!!

It is in a basket with Kiwiblog to me. The energy it takes me to forget the comments isn't worth the nuggets of wisdom.

Prof Lessig's stirring speech is also available now as a Youtube clip:

So you can still come along but can't have a late one?
Just tell the boss you're menstruating on Friday :-)

I had to acknowledge to myself that I was basically trolling a lot of the time at Kiwiblog. Didn't seem right.

Yeah, I was considering coming up, because I had such a great time at the last one, but Thursday makes it problematic. *shakes fist*

S'true. I offered her half my bed and everything. Now I have a spare half a bed...

I always assume that all my conversations that aren't one on one involve members of both genders. Why wouldn't they? That'd just be weird.

Yes, it's an infectious attitude, that I've opted to quarantine myself from.

Pardon? You trolling? You make me look again I'll send you the optometry bill.
Being a bit sensitive (no I didn't watch Modern Family, but Bones and Toy Story 3 got me this week ;-) ), this is the only show in town, AFAIAC. One thing though, with this largely educated, and one might even say pendant wearing, editorial oversight committee (in a good way), being an errant apostrophe disseminator it can be a bit daunting.

I'll admit to having deliberately wound Lyn up at Megan's place. Suffice it to say he thinks moderating is "deleting offensive comments", and he's rather be programming or something. You get the culture you breed, twonkface.

Brave of him to turn up there..

And banning people for questioning who the pseudonymous pontificating posters are.

That did end up being a very fun conversation, in the end, purely because it demonstrated so perfectly how to be an asshat.

I too find that hard to believe.

Emma Hart, in reply to
Ha, I just went to find that post, so Sacha could assess whether he wanted to use the word "brave" to describe that, rather than "condescending" or "borderline abusive".

Sacha, in reply to
Oh you meant her *blog*, not her home. #lessbrave

Megan Wegan, in reply to
I must admit, reading it back all this time later, it's a lot funnier than I remember it being at the time. But yes, I think "condescending" and "should spend more time coding" ring truest.

The right have been fighting and winning the class war for years. If you choose not to partake, you're still a victim. (unless you happen to get lucky and wind up on the winning side). Just sayin.

I was very privileged to be included with the 30 or so WN people invited to an Internet NZ breakfast talk by Prof. Lessig on Saturday, where he covered similar ground to this Radio NZ interview:
http://www.radionz.co.nz/music101
One slightly depressing thing was Lessig’s suggestion that there was not much point in NZ trying to negotiate to improve the terms of the TPPA, but that instead interested parties should utilise ‘blue-sky’ planning to re-write copyright law/ treaties etc to come into effect so far into the future that current USA lobbyists are not interested.
I was undoubtedly the most naïve person in the room, but does anyone think the TPPA is worth the risk/cost? I just don’t get it.
Post your response…
