Dash, Careen, and Stagger?
could be a law firm -
Slew, Grabble and Runaway
or for those more fatalistic briefs
Watt, Wilby, Wilby…I didna feel that 5 at all,
all the usual 5 indicators
about the house unswayed…
bedside reading untoppled.
- felt that 4.6 at 8.04pm thoughI laughed that the 5 came during
the briefing that there would be no 6s
(but large tremors for decades!)Can we start a lottery on the 10,000th shake
maybe on different criteria
- Location
- Size
- Time
with a bigger prize if ya get two right
and a massive trifecta!NB: This was someone else’s idea in The Press comments page
after I suggested a special celebration for the 10,000th shake…
and It’s a good idea
if ya can’t beat em
enjoin ’em!
or at least harness
their improbability… -

Lets please remember this took place in a tent that looks like an oversized diaphram.

Here is a video of the Japanese earthquake over time.
It is 9 minutes long, but don't be put off as it is necessary to show the full effect. In Japanese but it is fairly self explanatory....
Put the sound on too!!!
The action starts at about 2 minutes but I suggest you watch it as it is spellbinding when they let go.
Fascinating watching the big one explode and then settle down for a short day or so then all hell beaks loose just off the coast for the rest of the year!!!
Also note a few clusters right on top of each other around the spot of the big one that occur a coupl;e of tiems just before the biggie.
Precursers???? Who would have taken a bet....

A certain vocal part of my family wants me to move to Dunedin
One of our city councillors in particular is making a dick of himself along those lines.

Joe Wylie, in reply to
making a dick of himself
. . . providing the perfect cue for Bob Parker to respond in kind.
In an ideal world these two posturers would retire to a tacky motel. Instead Lee Vandervis may well have ensured himself a spot on the next International Speakers Series, funded by donations from ‘ordinary NZers’ to the Mayoral Relief Fund (golf clubs! tram sheds!). Faux controversy by way of distraction is all the go in these parts right now.

I'd love it if Geonet would put up the text (or a summary) of the briefing they gave the other day. And particularly that graph of expected numbers of aftershocks vs. actual numbers. I found that graph oddly comforting: seems we're only now approaching the expected numbers.

Hebe, in reply to
I found the aftershock decay trend comforting too. Sort of. Have emailed you a shake talk graphics link I found on twitter (can't remember where from) that will not post here.

Mmmm. I wondered about the timing of the Friday quake briefing.Conveniently coincidental I think.

give us a hand…
the Mayoral Relief Fund
I note it doesn’t give a balance of how much is left either…
and nothing distributed since October!
I hope they didn’t contribute to the crappy
ChoiceCHCH pop up picnic promotional signage…
Teed off…
I also note Tony Marryatt’s old golfing record has disappeared from the Golf Records website – probably too late now that he has been outed as having played golf on two of the weekends he “worked without a break” and also played golf several working weekdays as well!
all that’s there now is a game last Tuesday, which was the last day of his holiday as far as I can work out… (Good that his first thought on actually returning to the City was to play golf…)
I wonder if some diligent reporter at The Press or somewhere can track down the record of Marryatt’s behaviour at Hamilton Council when he forced a senior manager (who I believe clashed with Marryatt) to resign over one small infraction, all because Marryatt said no one was above the rules (or similar tone) while I now believe Marratt has brought the council in Chch into disrepute, transgressed spending limits or by passed by breaking into smaller blocks, and playing golf on workdays must be no-no too… -

I hope someone got the screenshot!

he has been outed as having played golf
any good links discussing that rather than direct to the golfing site? Twitter beckons..

From the Press online comments:
Marryatt : 11th sept 2011 - In Hamilton playing golf (a Tuesday ) .. 3rd May 2011 playing at Clearwater ( a Tuesday) 25th October 2010 playing golf in Hamilton ( a Monday) 21st October 2010 playing golf at Shirley ( a Thursday) ... hardworking indeed - must be hell having to search for all those wayward balls and lug your golf clubs up and down hills Search here :
And yes, the link provided returns the message "Oops, we found the bunker."
Golf in working hours. Let any City Care employee try that and see how long they last.

. . . the Friday quake briefing
Those independent scientists.
From Paul McMahon (I’m Paul. I am your Labour for 2021 Community Board Member in Spreydon-Heathcote, Christchurch.) on Twitter:
“I asked a question about fracking at the #EQNZ briefing today – and the scientists dodged it and looked at Gerry Brownlee.” -
Hebe, in reply to
I thought the fracking question was unfair and untimely given the context of the briefing and the people Mr McMahon was asking. A cheap shot IMHO. I have deep concerns about fracking but the time to raise it was not Friday. As a publicity stunt the question strangled the fracking subject and sent it into the fringe.

Thanks Hebe! I have tracked the power-point download link to here. And there is a good CCC summary pdf here.
That pdf contains this link for further info on Geonet but it looks like the public isn’t allowed to see it!
None of these has the graph I was looking for, which shows numbers of aftershocks since 4 Sept 2010 to present vs. number expected. I know it was shown towards the end of the briefing. Still a mystery to me why all this stuff isn't up on the Geonet site. Isn't that the logical place?

Not defending Maryatt but it's likely 'par for the course' for deal-making executives, like cocktail parties are.

exactly. might empower you.

Perhaps you're right , I wasn't there. But it's an argument that sounds uncomfortably close to Councillor Ngaire Button's claim before fleeing from anti-Marryatt protestors that this is no time to be addressing social justice issues.

See if TV3 or CCC still has the live feed on its website. (I think I know the graph you liked.)
-
Hebe, in reply to
I watched the live feed on the TV3 website. I much prefer to watch to originals of these things than rely on the interpretation of the the participants or media present. Here is the link

Unfortunately I'm not prepared to watch the whole hour to find it. ;-)

OK, found it. Stuff has a shorter clip. Graph in question at 10:12.

mac #103 06:26 pm Jan 07 2012:
Like Tony lm a very keen golfer and l might add facetiously, older and considerably better. I happened to play today at Harewood and it so appears that before xmas and on a working day a Mr Marryatt and 3 others played the woodland course. Mr Marryatt didnt put his card in so it doesnt appear on the computer records of players rounds. Was it you Mr Tony Marryatt? A simple yes or no will do> If it was you how often do you play golf during ratepayers time and dont put your card in so your rounds cant be tracked? If its you Mr Tony Marryatt it makes you a professional golfer as we are paying you whilst you play. Also who were your playing partners? This might be interesting folks>
