  • linger,

    Flagging
as in, Key continues flagging a dead cause, despite flagging interest in … flagging.

    Infernal:
    Key’s flag preference.

  • Lyndon Hood, in reply to Tristan,

Trivia: The HTML error 501 (“Not Implemented: The server does not support the functionality required to fulfill the request. This is the appropriate response when the server does not recognize the request method and is not capable of supporting it for any resource.”) is also what you get when you ask Australia to respect human rights.

    Berm gardener

Yeah, I know, two words, but I enjoy saying it and the image it conjures up, it was either that or Berm gardener license

  • Don Reid,

Can we have acronyms? Through October, I was confused by commentators describing Ritchie McCaw as a ‘goat’. Then I saw it written as G.O.A.T., which, to me, read like a mid-90s Wildside band. Hey I think he’s the ‘Greatest… ‘ , but in written form G.O.A.T. was as ubiquitous as it was confounding.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Can I propose that we limit the words chosen to words not used for the first time in this comments thread :-P

  • Hilary Stace,

“Climate change” dominates everything else this year. Although “TPPA” is still simmering. Government speak is all about “investing for outcomes” .

  • Hebe,

Paris. For atrocities – started with Charlie Hedbo on January 7 – and for the Paris climate change talks.

and to flog a dead horse beyond recognition:

    Chinese-sounding

    As in:

David Seymour : Will the pandas have Chinese-sounding names?

Mr SPEAKER : In so far as there may be some prime ministerial responsibility.

Rt Hon JOHN KEY : Yes, they will be called “Bing Bing”, “Xing Xing”, “Zhing Zhing”

  • David Hood,

More than Twitterati, I feel “death of Twitter” based on the reporting of Twitter based stories this year, but that it is bit much a phrase rather than a word.

I know we’re not voting yet. But I’m with Jolissa: Quaxing. It’s new. It’s positive, and yet – how to put it – moral. It knows the difference between right and wrong. And in the best of Kiwi traditions, it’s both pleasantly pejorative and satisfyingly sporty.

It reminds us of our national sport in a parallel universe: farnarkling.

  • Bart Janssen,

Refugee will almost certainly get my vote.

I really wish the Nelson Street Cycle Path had a great name but to be fair it’s just an Auckland thing.

Another Auckland thing was the Pohutukawa 6

Because I’m a scientist I’d suggest Genome editing, but I suspect it’s probably a year or two early. If you don’t know anything about it I suggest you look it up. If I had to pick one technology that will shake the world up it will be that.
