I am so annoyed I'm stuck at the office with no audio on my computer :(. I have a decent value Marbecks voucher to spend I do so want to make it worthwhile. Keep the recommendations coming!
As for remixes of such things, the Short Club remix of Florence and the Machine's Cosmic Love is beautiful.

Lana Del Rey it is Ok - but I have enough other great music to catch up on that is less derivative.to pay her any mind.
What would you say 'Video Games' is derivative of? I can't think of any other song that sounds like that.
I like the album, mostly, because while it contains elements of various sorts of pop music, it's really quite different to most current pop music. As you might expect from a hip- hop producer working with a full orchestra.

I just had a load of music arrive this morning, courtesy of my brother in Berlin, who fancies himself as my tutor in music appreciation. Some of the stuff that he sent that I enjoyed was: The Chain Gang of 1974
EscortFeist
Hercules and Love Affair
Jose James
and Simian Ghost
There was a lot of music there - most of which I had never heard of before. Alpine, Atlas Sound, The Big Pink, Bombay Bicycle Club, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Boris, Caged Animals, Chairlift, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Dan Mangan, Daughter, The Dear Hunter, Deer Tick, Ernest Gonzales, Fionn Regan, First Aid Kit, Friends, Future Islands, Gigi, Goyte, Grouplove, The Juan MacLean, Kathleen Edwards, Kathryn Calder, Ladytron, Laura Marling, Loney Dear, Los Campesinos, M83, Metronomy, Mutemath, Neon Indian, Pallers, Real Estate, Release the Sunbird, Ryan Adams, Sandro Perri, Sepalcure, Southern Shores, Starfucker, Tennis, Trust, Twin Sister, Wintercoats, and Wolf Gang.
Get googling!

There have been noises about this, but I can't tell really, as it was all Greek to me.
The singing starts at 41 secs.

Part of the melody is somewhat similar – which of course has never happened in the history of popular music ever – but basically it just seems to be another peg for the haters.

Which I probably should have left out there in the obscurity.
Jackie, I have been getting a bit hoked on Feist, and they were good at Laneway. Although the PA died in the middle of a song, and so did her mic, which left the band playing the intro for several minutes while they fixed it. She bounced back Ok.
Certainly seems to handle the live thing better than some, especially with such a quiet song as this.

I know. It was a bit of a surprise. Hame has hugely eclectic taste – music is his everything really – and he’s always trying to get me to broaden my musical horizons. His trick is that he always throws in something I am bound to love - like Jose James so I have to listen to it all to sort the wheat from the chaff. I didn’t like much on that list – all a bit alt or rock-y for me. But I thought others would enjoy the selection.

Really lovely. Stuff like that is often difficult, live. Songs are sometimes so dependent on where they are sung. I am minded of the year that Breaks Co-op played at BDO, which I thought was a bit strange, being as that particular album's music was best consumed in an intimate setting. I understand it was disappointing for them, and no wonder.

theres a lot in your crate Jackie that are wonderful... but also more aligned for the young - ie mining territory many of us have been over before especially the indie rock stuff - if I was young I'd think a lot of that haul brilliant but alas I'm just young at heart

Another listen to Born To Die while preparing dinner.
Anyone who says this is derivative, same-old pop music has not actually listened to the record. It contains bits of everything from MOR pop ballad to hip-hop. Things jump in and out of the mix like a dub production. There is an orchestra.
Of the later songs on the album, ’Million Dollar Man’ is a swaggering retro ballad that suggests she actually can sing, at least in the studio.
‘This Is What Makes Us Girls’, about being one of the hot girls at school, has an amazing, dubstep-tempo chorus that Rebecca Black could sing.
Indeed, I keep feeling like this thing is one big dubstep remix in waiting. Pop is slowing down.
I agree with the reviewers who suggest that the character is only intermittently carried through. If this was meant to be a literary concept album, their attention wandered. But as an interesting take on 2012 pop music: yeah, I just keep liking this.

I'm moving to a house on the hill on Wednesday. White Zone FTW! I hope. :-)

BTW anyone who thinks LDR’s persona is contrived or silly should watch the new Madonna video. If that sounds like a punishment, it is.

Then you go on to say what it is derivative of.
