  • Russell Brown,

Parliament sits again this week, restarting a political scene that's the same but different. Will our representatives move on from last year's rancour? What new narratives will the year hold? Who are the key characters? What will matter in 2008? Share your hopes, fears, dreams and, above all predictions here.

National will be ahead in the polls. Key will be warm and woolly and all-inclusive.

Then, Bob Clarkson will open his mouth ...

Our esteemed politicians return from vacation,
In their hearts are the interests of our nation,
But the all the brains of this bunch,
are still at the beach having lunch,
So we are left with another year of piss taking.

Having recently discovered poor people, and not content with eliminating the underclass with muesli bars, Lord Key will storm the country with a Fashion Parade for Poverty. It will be announced that the reason poor people are poor, is not only because they are lazy and hate freedom, but also because they don't dress nicely.

National Party MPs will play volleyball in the street and start wearing their dress shirts untucked in solidarity with the poor; an Australian t-shirt manufacturer will supply free t-shirts with pictures of plastic tiki on them, empahsizing the fake and appropriated use of something once important.

In order to help the public understand that millionaires understand the lives of ordinary kiwis, and indeed are just ordinary struggling 'battlers' like us all, Big John will move his family to McGehan Close so they can mix and live with his New Best Friends.

Key will leave the blue ribbon seat of Helensville and stand instead in Mangere. His Parnell mansion will be converted to a drop in centre for the dispossessed and his many millions will be donated to charity for the poor, demonstrating his commitment to helping the underclass instead of just lobbying for more priveleges for the privileged.

The people of Bryndwr will grow weary of being the starting point of John Key's biographical trajectory and will respond by removing the vowels from his name when referring to him in print. Since "Jhn Ky" also handily accords with text-speak, this will lead to a political revival among Bryndwr youth, spearheading a new era of activist consciousness in north-west Christchurch.

Oh yeah. If the economy starts to slow/tank, the Labour government will announce that it's finally using the state's marvellous surplus and healthy balance sheet and embark on some major (perhaps visionary, perhaps white elephant) public works/infrastructure projects.

With the aim of shaking Tehran’s commitment to its nuclear program, Bush also approved last fall secret operations to target Iranian influence in southern Lebanon, in western Afghanistan, in the Palestinian territories and inside Iran.

These polly's talk a good game but when it comes down to it thats all they do is talk. After seeing the stadium issue rear its fugly head again last night on 3, I am now certain that we are a banana republic in waiting. These guys don't plan to build a better nation, they plan to get themselves re-elected.

Yes there will be infighting galore, Winston will seek to feather his thorny nest further and John Key will keep making salient points and then proceed to miss them completely, but the AB's will probably win RWC and possibly save their collective asses. What sort of reflection is it on us as a nation that the success of a sporting team can save the regime in power?

A virtual slap for anyone who calls for Blackadder for P.M.

Peter Dunne plays the "reefer madness" card once too often, conspires with Jim Anderton to ban "medical heroin". Newspaper editors rejoice at long overdue new front in war on drugs. Lone doctor quoted in said newspapers expresses mild concern that morphine and codeine are now unavailable - but view is relegated to page C16, after one and a half glorious sections of super 14 round 2 coverage.

Business as usual in other words. And John Key will not visit the "McGehan Close-esque" streets in his own electorate. :-(

    Surreal enough for ya?
