I can't recall a TV death that made me this sad since... uh... maybe Adrianna on Sopranos. Oh, and wasn't expecting the final scene of Housewives either, not that THAT one made me sad.
The Outrageous Fortune website forum is pretty active as you'd imagine, with people calling for Claire's return. I really doubt that's gonna happen, people... unless... no twin sister, right?

Claire Chitham has been doing a lot of other projects recently - like Neighbours in Australia, and an upcoming play...
but that shouldn't stop us from indulging in wild unsubstantiated gossip. Feel free to add to the following:
1] She's on P and was starting to behave like Britney on set.
2] kept asking "can we get a part for Mikey?"
3] co-star Anthony Starr (Van) indulged her 'method acting' by doing her backstage, but became fed up when she kept insisting he invite Jethro for a 3-way.
4] quit, to show solidarity with Eric (Brian Sergent)
5] Waverly is returning to Shortland Street (also produced by South Pacific Pictures)
6] she's preggers. -
BTW - I thought Claire Chitham was/is a great actress too.

Yeah, bummer about Aurora - I just wish they could have engineered it without having Van's character go from A Bit Thick to Delusional Paranoid Lunatic in the space of ten minutes. Seriously, is he actually meant to be mentally handicapped or is he just dumb? For the first time in OF, I found myself annoyed at the writing.

A little from column A and a lot from Column B, perhaps? :) Then again, I don't think it's that big a stretch that under the amiable doofus with maco 'tude to burn Van could turn into a very, very scared (and rather scary) little boy. Hell, where would we be if any of the Wests responded to a crisis in a calm, deliberate, thoroughly reasoned manner?

Actually, I think it was pretty well in keeping; the only thing that surprised me was that they crammed the whole saga into a single episode (which leads me to agree with Craig's conclusion that the fall of Van West is nowhere near done).

Munter's attempts to encourage or support him, and his obvious disappointment when they failed, were a very good and realistic foil to Van's coming unstuck. Another thing - the whole drama was precipitated by Van jonesing for pot - there is a link between heavy use and mental health issues.
I found myself wondering very briefly this morning whether Jethro was absent from that episode for actor unavailability reasons like (I presume) Pascalle. The boundaries of reality and television are getting a little blurry here.

Well, yeah - I could've bought it if it had developed more gradually, but going from blissfully engaged to the love of his life to screaming at her that she's a dirty slut and refusing to listen to her while she cries and pleads with him to hear her out in the space of a single episode... I can only assume the writers were suddenly in a rush to free up Claire Chitham for whatever she's doing next.

Some people just don't do realism, and either idolise someone or demonise them - see borderline personality disorder. Of course, that would make it less likely that he'd stayed friends with Munter all those years.
Shakespeare in Much Ado About Nothing tells a similar story, although that definitely has realism issues. I'd say history is littered with the corpses of women whose partners have had their illusions shattered all at once, but it's literally true, still happening and far too grim to be that flip about.
I saw it not so much as unrealistic but evidence of a real break in Van's mental state.

Can I just say how wonderful a writer you are (big suckup) and can we please, please, please hold someone important in TV land to ransom so that we get to see some more of your fabulous Serial Killers? I thought that was one of the best telly programs ever.

Anyway, for those of you that asked, Prime is starting Doctor Who on the 19th, starting with the Christmas Special, "The Runaway Bride", which stars Catherine Tate and an unrecognisable Sarah Parish.

Is it just me, or was OF always a little more sophisticated than to fall into the 'lovable rogues' cliché? The thing I've come to love about this show (apart from it often being screamingly funny character-based comedy) is that you can identify with the Wests, without particularly liking any of them - which is much harder than it looks. Or am I just way over-thinking here?
