  • Danielle,

Jarvis is playing his own show at the Powerstation on December 4. And our household said 'hoorah!'

Just heard Jarvis Cocker with The Phoenix Foundation. Maybe he will do more than 1 gig, with others ?

  • Stewart,

Me and (Mrs Me) are heading over to Melbourne for a couple of nights to see the Dali exhibition and celebrate our wedding anniversary. Can't really afford it, but how many times in your life do you get the chance to see that many Dali's in a single show? And she deserves a couple of nights away, larging it.

Well, wouldn't know it to be a once in a life time thing but Happy Anniversary anyway :)

I find an exhibition of peoples from the former Yugoslavia somewhat demeaning.

  • Stewart,

Steve, in such an exhibition, how many true dalmatians would you spot?

Sophie, my understanding is that this exhibition includes items from multiple collections that would otherwise require much travelling to see. Travelling that would, ordinarily, be outside our budget. I see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

I'm seeing spots before my eyes,
my head feels twice its normal size,
and every Sunday morning I'm so sick

Be prepared for how small Dali paintings are. Most of the reproductions are blown up.

  • bronwyn,

Nah... if there were more unflappable octogenarian transgendered pot-smoking landladies out there, the world would be a much more agreeable place. :)

Speaking of which, and getting horribly off-topic (sorry!), I just purchased Michael Tolliver Lives, the 20-years later update to the original Tales books. About half way through, and not sure how I feel about it just yet - seems to be missing a lot of the humour of the earlier ones.

Although there are double the number of transgendered characters in this one (so, yes, there's two), and it's not often you read mainstream books where trans people are allowed to be anything more than stereotypes, so that's not a bad thing.

    True... sometimes...
I remember as a young lad (can't have been older than 11 or so) when I saw Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee... at the Thyssen-Bornemisza exhibition which toured NZ in 1980. I think was one of the first times (the first?) that such a collection of modern masters had ever come to NZ. Picasso's, Pollock's, Jasper John's - you name it...they were there.
Anyway - Dream Caused by a... was used for a lot of the PR of the exhibition and I really took to it (I had a copy from the front cover of the Listener in my bedroom, thus managing to get a picture of a naked woman on my wall without any disapproval from my parents). When I finally saw the original it was disappointingly small.
However he could go both ways and at the same exhibition there was crucifixion depiction by Dali and when I first saw that - BAM! - it was awesomely huge. A lot of his works in the 1950s started to get bigger and bigger (sometimes reaching enormous proportions) as that's what his clients / patrons wanted and he began to use assistants in their execution.
Anyway - I'm off to Melbourne next month and I'm almost wetting myself about seeing the Dali exhibition.

Oh, raptures. I was 16, at Marsden in Wellington, and I went with my Art History class. I almost self combusted.

  • Gareth Ward,

Never hesitate to publicly comment on people parking in disability or kiddie parks, especially at supermarkets

In the same vein of "can I help carry your shopping", I long to grow the balls to yell "OH MY GOD, YOU'VE LEFT YOUR BABY IN THE SUPERMARKET! I'll help you find them" at people who stroll up very alone to their cars in the With-babies spots while I'm hauling the 1y/o out.

  • Yamis,

Reminds me of the time I spotted someone at the intersection outside our flat chuck a complete set of McDonald's rubbish out of the window. I tore downstairs, out on to the street, scooped it up and managed to hiff the whole lot back through the driver's window just as the light went green. Felt good!

For McDonalds litter you'd struggle to beat Huntly McDonalds carpark. Well not the carpark itself, but just wander over to the stream bank that's adjacent to the carpark and take a peep down the bank. Unbelievable. You almost feel like chucking some there yourself because it could become a community project like a cairn or something.

Whatever you do, don't mow the lawn this summer. I suggest a few more bottles should about kill it completely.
