  • Don Christie,

Bob McCroskie's brain went into overdrive. His widely-reported analysis was that "sexual liberation" was the cause of this abuse.

There must be some confusion in the FF ranks because Garth George says the abuse just ain't so.

An interesting gameto play is to try and match up George works, which come only with his name, with press releases put out by similar organisations to FF.

This is a good place to start but I wonder if the Herald, that great defender of democracy, is getting value for money.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Well, let's all take a deep breath and repeat this mantra: "Freedom of speech and assembly applies to everyone - even vile fucktards I wouldn't let anywhere near my children unless supervised by a sane person with a taser."

And ironically enough, Three just pulled Saving Grace (a show whose main point of interest was Holly Hunter having acrobatic simulated intercourse with another actor playing a married co-worker) because nobody was watching it. And what has replaced it: Repeats of Bones, where the raunchiest thing you're even going to see is the occasional PG-rated semi-flirtatious banter between the very pretty leads.

So much for the moral cesspool that is Three's audience, Bob...

  • InternationalObserver,

Family First has called for a boycott of this US import because former X-Files star Dave Duchovny is given an on-screen blowjob by a nun in a church. It's a dream sequence, no genitals in actual sight, and it's only half as twisted as some of the freakish stuff in the Old Testament, but nevertheless, it was enough for the moral majority to scream "Blasphemy!".

And yet a few weeks back on Rescue Me we had one of the Firemen actually having sex with an actual Nun! Not a peep from Bob, but then it did screen at 11pm (not the 9.30 Family Viewing Hour) so he was probably tucking his kids in to bed at the time ...

I think you mean an actor playing a Fireman having simulated intercourse with an actress playing a nun. Just as I don't think Dennis Leary actually raped Andrea Roth; though, again, rather ironic that a pretty in your face depiction of an unstable, alcoholic drug addict raping his ex-wife didn't upset Family First at all...

It is kind of strange how the people who shout the loudest about 'family values' always seem to end up in court on kiddie-fiddly charges.

I remember one of my relatives raving about how Graham Capill would make a wonderful prime minister because he had true "family values". Personally, I think the world could have done without Capill's personal interpretation of that phrase...

Give the man a break: he can't possibly actually WATCH the stuff he's trying to get taken off air, so he needs some other clues to content. 'Rescue Me' doesn't have a rude word in the title.

Of course to make these arguments you have to assume that Bob McCroskie actually watches the shows. Rescue Me is a show about firemen, oh that'll be fine...**__Californication__!!!** I will protest this even if it's about kittens!

Personally I'm just angry I missed the first few episodes, guess I'll just BT it. (heh, getting smut from the internet instead)

I meant actually as in it wasn't a dream sequence unlike the scene in Californication.

Okay, not sure of the House Rules, and this is probably breaking Nettiquette but .... I'm cutting and pasting a comment (abridged) I made in the Radiation thread, since this guest blog is all about the same subject:

And speaking of Californication and the Advertiser Ban driven by Family First ....

Are we going to accept this? Seriously, I thought this sort of thing only happened in the US? This is a show that screens at 9.30pm! And they've successfully convinced advertisers to pull their advertising. If we allow Family First's action to go unchecked, what next? Will & Grace?

While I accept that in a democracy anyone should be allowed to start a boycott, I also think it should be possible to challenge that boycott. Maybe we should boycott those advertisers too timid to stand up to Family First?

I'd suggest picking on one and would suggest it should be Burger King. I think it's hipocritical of them to suggest that the show is too controversial when some of their own advertising has been viewed in the same light. They won't pull those campaigns but they will pull advertising from a show screening in an adult timeslot??

And maybe Craig can cut n paste his reply ...
    :-)

Who cares about Californication anyway, it interferes with the Dresden Files, ban the Pineapple Lump! I'd like to see Bob's upcoming complaint regarding the depiction of * cue shock/horror* - Magic and Wizardry and all the dangers that will bring...

    the Dresden Files

I've never been able to watch that show, the title just gives me the creeps. Couldn't they have given the title character a different surname? Albert Aushwitz? Ned Nuremburg?
yeah, yeah, I know, it's from the book

You know what you're gonna get with anything Duchovny is in - Red Shoe Diaries etc. As if no Catholic School Boy hasn't had that fantasy.
Fair enough for Lyndsay Freer to voice concern, rather strongly I thought.
Someone must have said to Duchovny you're a wooden actor & he took it as a compliment, he's reason enough not to watch.

Are the Dresden Files coming to NZ?

Only from "friends in America". And if it really does end up screening here, they'll bury it in some time slot no-one watches, just like they do with anything else good (The Wire, Veronica Mars...)

So, how long till Family First tries yet again to get the leave of the Solicitor-General to bring a private prosecution for Blasphemous Libel? And isn't it time that law went?

Wow, I stand corrected. What is it with Prime actually screening stuff? First Dr Who, and now this?

(Of course, I've already seen it thanks to aforementioned friends in America, but the gesture is nice).

My mum's pissed she doesn't get Prime. Imagine if they'd bought Torchwood. They might have... played it or something. Maybe even all in consecutive weeks.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

The interview with Bob McCroskie on bFM is interesting because he admits that he hadn't actually watched Californication before calling for it to be boycotted.

Apparently Family First's cohorts in Australia gave them a summary of the show, and so it seems like FF's outrage was based on a plot summary.

This is dumb for two reasons: 1) Australia and New Zealand have different cultures. What's outrageous in Australia may be acceptable in New Zealand, and vice versa. 2) Like Roger Ebert says about films, it's not what a film is about, but how it is about. In other words, the description "a man gets a blowjob from a nun" is virtually meaningless unless you view the scene within the episode as a whole and see what is really going on.

Ugh. This is, like, high school media studies. Family First need to watch more television.
