Simon Barnett requires great strength of will to even approach the Forgiving Stage, I am so unworthy.

Family First appear to be somewhat mollified, if suspicious. Leading me to doubt their grasp of what the bill said in the first place.

m you are right as usual, i am humourless today.
i guess we do need bwian.
but i don't understand which system mora proves effective.
nor do i understand how mccormack demonstrates we're over tall-poppyism, or is that he is willing to cut down the short poppies too?

if you mean JK trying to be JFK, i really really hope he tries to push that one. even Goebbels acknowledged there are serious limits to what message management can achieve.

if the "your views" column of the herald is anything to go by Mr Key will have his work cut out.

and if thats a valid representation of the heralds readership, it contains a lot of deranged child beaters.

suggest PA start a fund to facilitate their migration to Australia as thats where they seem to want to go

And you're right about JK, however he's there as female bait, I know because my wife told me, but frankly I don't see him being able to win over Marilyn.

As others see us: the amendment in the eyes of overseas media (courtesy Google News):

"Kiwis to ban smacking" - Brisbane Times, AAP report.

"The controversial new law will make it an offense for parents to use force to discipline their children." - Int'l Herald Tribune, AP report.

If anybody needed proof that internet polls are a joke, check out the results on the Stuff and Herald websites.

Two differently worded questions, leading to very large majorities, respectively, for and against the amendment.

Judging by the General Debate, the Nat line is that it's all down to the heroic diplomacy of Mr Key.

That's interesting, he told Kathryn Ryan, on 9 to noon, that it was due to a chat with Cullen that they had at a conference in Australia.
He didn't actually say that "it was all down to me" and actually passed up the opportunity to do so. Do we see the emergence of a McCully spin????

Not at all. You could well get the same result with proper scientific polls asking the same questions (as they are very different questions).

I doubt there is anyone who considers the amendment makes the bill worse (though many don't think it makes a difference).

I'm one of those people who voted one way on one poll and the other on the other. The amendment makes the bill more palatable, though personally, I'd have preferred Key's original wording, but this is better - the polls reflect this.

    Think of an analgous question:

are you pleased that the proposal to add 50% to the price of petrol has been cut to add only 20%?
    - most people think yes (the Stuff poll).

Is the petrol price increase now a good idea?
    - most people still think no (the Herald poll).

  • simon g,

I think the internet polls simply reflect the new state of confusion.

The Parliamentary debate is on now. Judith Collins spoke in favour of the bill. Heather Roy spoke against. And Sue Bradford and Judith Collins will now both be supporting the same law.

When two people who fundamentally disagree end up wanting the same thing, while two people who largely agree are on opposite sides, something is wrong.

This really does seem to be the amendment that says whatever you want it to say.

true. it's the amendment that lets National de-couple itself from the fundy-right without losing too much face, and which allows National to u-turn despite any changes while making them look like their pretend concerns with the previous (ie. exactly the same) version were justified.
it's the amendment that says what was always so in the first place.

Just saw Lordgod Tamaki on 'Campbell Live'. He says that Helen Clarke is not qualified enough to make law about children because she has no children of her own.
No law about abortion for you then, Bishop?

Another good reason to watch Mark Sainsbury on CloseUp instead. If you had, you may have seen Simon Barnett make a far more persuasive case.
