When Borders first opened in Christchurch, it had a fantastic science fiction selection - I could have walked in and picked out more than 20 books I really really wanted. I get the feeling from regular visits to Borders that its specialist selection may have gone downhill a little since the Whitcoulls acquisition - certainly, there isn't the "Wow look at the number of books that I could just take home with me RIGHT NOW" feeling that it used to have.

I can't remember the last time I bought a book for myself from Whitcoulls - even kids books I'll go to the Children's Bookshop for, where you have knowledgeable and passionate staff who know what they're talking about. I've bought stuff from Borders more often, and their prices seemed to be better than Whitcoulls.

Having said all that, I'm concerned at all this - Whitcoulls was apparently 30% of the market, and if it and Borders disappear, we're left with the Warehouse and Paper Plus / Take Note, where the selection is even worse.

Yeah - I didn't explain it very well at all - they were saying what day is it, she said "Well, yesterday was Tuesday" and he said "So that makes today....." and then left.

    Edits galore!!

I didn't pick up on it at the time, but when Olaf asked the girl in his car what day it was, did she say [edit] yesterday was Tuesday? Because that would make Axl's 21st on ....... you know ....... Wodin's Day. Which is cool. And apt. And I'm sure completely deliberate too.

I liked it a lot. No way the rest of the house will be watching Castle on a Monday from now on.

  • Busytown: Reading Room,

I'm guilty of the "books and records" checking too - DVDs not really, but that's because I only own about 10 DVDs in total, but HEAPS of books/records/CDs.

And houses without books or pot plants or photos/paintings/wall art of some sort always seem a little, well, barren to me.

This takes bat-shit crazy to a new level.

And on a brighter note, the school where I'm on the BOT (Rangiora, relatively unscathed by the quake) is having a mufti day / canned food collection today for the good folk of Kaiapoi (rather more badly hit by said quake).

  • Voting Local 2010,

Michael Hansen every now and again has a crazy ad in the Press where he espouses his belief that everything bad in the world everywhere is accomplished with the aid of secret rays. And yet, he never, ever wears a tinfoil hat in his photos.....

ETA My wife received her ballot papers last night, but I didn't - perhaps I've been disenfranchised, perhaps mine are still coming, who can tell. Until I get them you will have to do without a summary of the crashingly boring people who stand in Waimakariri.
