I'm down in Christchurch at the moment, and there's a couple of observations I'd make re cycling here. Many of the roads are still badly damaged, and there's alot of road works going on (certainly in the East and in town, anyway). There is fencing around most of the badly damaged buildings out of the cordoned area, but not all of them. And if I were a biker, riding on the footpaths would seem a bit risky, since many of those buildings are really near to the roadway. I've seen a few cyclists since I arrived here, but not as many as I expected, given how difficult it still is to get around via car (alternate routes need to be taken, much thought needs to be given about how you are going to get where you are going), and how far away many amenities are if you live in particular areas where petrol stations etc are still not open.

I think so Islander. He hasn’t lived here for any long period of time, in the last 20 years, and I sense disconnection for him. He lives, of course, in a city which is very other. So different to here – different language, different way of doing things. He eventually wants to live in Bangkok – not home but near enough for us to visit him. But yes, the cultural dissonance he feels here is obvious.
And Sacha, that’s was what he was saying. That Berlin is so cheap and that the arts are so valued there, that many artists live there. I see no problem with that, but I did think his characterisation of Auckland as a arts “ghost town” was a bit spurious. -

Hamish's pronouncement was that it was the best concert by a NZer he has ever seen. Which went then into his "NZ is a cultural wasteland these days. The arts are dying here. The artists who make it don't take government money. The whole funding mechanism is broken down" etc. Believe me, this argument went on ALL DAY.

Thanks my love - it's all good. She had suffered enough and been such a brave girl all through her back operation 5 yrs ago, and then the diabetes and her thyroid problems and the Cushings Disease. She just took her pills, and her shots, and her endless visits to Dr Chris. and kept on keeping on, but it all got a bit much for her poor wee body. So we're at peace about it. It was the right time.

nominate Dutch poppers Mouth & MacNeal's 1972 hit "Hello-A" (sic), and further challenge anyone - even Jackie - to get through the entire song.
Why, I oughta........but I won't because my DOG JUST DIED. Now do you feel guilty for maligning my musical taste? Eh? Good. :)

Before I retire for the evening, since we're all going to cark it tomorrow, anyway, here's one of my very favourite songs from back in the day. Fond memories of strolling around Victoria St Market when it wasn't a tourist trap.

And just in case one would think that I've lost my mojo.....
