but hey we don't complain when foppish indy bands sound pommy or crap reggae bands sound jamaican
Um, yes we do complain, the whole point of nz on air was Our Voice. you shouldn't be ashamed of your own accent or have to fake it to be accepted in your own country. The funding was to go to support the difference, not wipe it out.
That said we are a country made up of influences from the 4 corners of the world we came from, so a bit of brit, polynesian , etc perfectly ok, but a bit of ourselves would be nice too. as simon said overseas can do perfectly good versions of that without the need for some snotty nosed colony emulating them.

Chris Hocquard would be my choice for next NZoA head.
not bad, good knowledge and experience, loves music, smooth dresser, proven track record in philanthropic endeavors (ie does things for free to help his community)
wonder if there's anyone with radio experience that would be good for the plugging team, someone who knows how it works, doesn't roll over and die when they say no, etc.
I'd still like an explanation on how some of these sure fire radio fodder hits got like SJD beautiful Haze (I know its not hip hop but it is a good example of kiwi) got sidelined.
you can pick your own hiphop classics that should have been bigger. lets make a list. -
I have absolutely no indie rock cred. I was talking more hiphop street cred. Keeping it real :)
my point being if you're going to biff out the old school then you should have a new candidate who can do better in mind.
who's got cred in your book? (excluding one's self of course)

Lockwood Smith is in fact a Thunderbirds puppet?
further to your theory lockwood used to teach english at my school some 30 years ago and he looked pretty much the same then, no a hair on his head moved then and hasn't seemed to move since. Suspicious to say the least.

isn't the radio in australia multi tiered?
I was in melbourne last week and had radio their explained to me although I didn't catch it all.
I visited pbs thinking it was like community radio but their studio and facilities were pretty big. They had a roister of specialists shows which covered many bases. I was quite impressed but I don't know how many people actually listen to the station yet.
Apparently there was another chain above that and then the triple j chain.B nets are commercial radio stations. they have full time employees who earn their living from advertising. they target a more alternative market but they can't piss their advertisers off by pushing their playlists .
National radio has a more open field in some ways, although they don't really target a young audience, which is why the youth radio network was needed, essentially national radio for youth, no ads.
like the bbc has multi channels for different target audiences.can you give us a wider outline on Aust radio?
what are the commercial chains? -
young turk cred then, in a non genre defined way
-
Indie cred ??? fuck indie cred,
maybe you're taking indie cred to mean indie rock cred, I meant it like your young turks phrase. ie not making life easy for yourself.
if you going to set up a system that only looks after your interests then expect to be fucked over by it when someone else pushes it to favour them.
-
Isnt it funny how the young turks become the old boys.
I've noted this point before. maybe thats part of growing up. you lose your idealism and drive to rebel.
I was trying to think of some people who were notable young turks and had become part of the establishment while maintaining their indie cred.
I've got a lot of time for Mike Chunn, and Chris Knox on that level, although the double j and twice the t connection took a little shine off it for me. Knox's movie reviews still convey his charting his own course thing.
any others?

but please try and bear in mind that it's my house.
that's an interesting concept.
It's a fact.
without prejudice I see what you're saying re paying for and responsibility for the site etc,
The interesting concept bit (said without sarcasm) is to what degree can someone call a section of the internet open to the public theirs?
yes its hosted on serves you pay for but the content when made public enters a whole other level, one quite different from ones modest Auckland accommodation, let alone the difference between a private forum and one such as PA which sets itself up as a media experiment of sorts.and no I wouldn't engage in lively debate/criticism in your real world home. I would do it here though
Do you think there is a philosophical difference between the 3 places (real world, private forum, public forum)?(serious question, no sarcasm)

little bit of spare time to address a couple of comments
and implied I was lying when I explained the delay in him responding to the discussion. That's the kind of thing that annoys me.
I was winding you up, taking the piss, I thought it was amusing, and certainly events read as such.
you have to admit it was mildly amusing that brendan couldn't get onto a discussion board that takes all of 2mins to sign up to. That it was such an effort to get on and address some serious criticisms.Until he actually made it it looked like more of the same avoidance, as per previous occurrences, which did make it look suspicious, I think thats fair, no offence meant to you but....
Its to his credit that he did get on and make some effort to address issues raised. But really, what choice did he have? It was making him look really bad on a reasonably well known public forum. Maybe my goading played no part in that, maybe it did, who knows. I'm glad he did present himself and got a few good points cleared up from the sessions.
He hasn't been back to address anything further though. maybe I'll write out a list of unanswered straightly put questions. Maybe put them to the broadcasting commission too.
