  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review - The Proposals, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

Well, last time people had a chance to vote on Parliments size I believe 81% thought a smaller Parliment was the way to go

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review - The Proposals,

I do wish that they had taken objections to there being any threshold on board
    The threshold is anti democratic

And despite being a South Islander I do wonder if a debate about the 16 seats for the south would be worthwhile especially as all forward population studies show a steady increase in the North Island (Auckland) growth
The present system will mean that Parliament size will increase faster than the overall population growth which isn't such a bad thing except many people feel the place is to big already except wannbe MPs

That is just to close to the bone Russell, stayed the night!
What it does prove (again) is that no one is all bad and non human just as the alternative is also true
Mr Laws, is his record so clean he can be trusted to throw the first stone?

  • Legal Beagle: The law may be that stupid,

Hmmm sometimes when I contemplate the whole political donation scene I am inclined to change my mind on allowing politicians to dig into the trough of public money to buy their way back into office
Then I remember who wrote the rules
And then I remember who actually gets the monies, the media and various print shops
Maybe we should give each seeker after public office a small amount of money, very small amount and tell them to get out there and meet their potential voters

    Flax flowers nectar
Kiekie flowers, not that I am sure about these as they don't grow this far south,
Ti tree was the biggy down here and there are stories of the whalers making rum with the sugar from them

  • Hard News: War, now and then, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Hilary, I often feel those who did not serve had a hard time of it living through the 50s. Of course they were alive but they had missed out on what a lot of the returned men felt was the measure of a man and there was certainly some ill will when the troops were furloughed
For instance it was very difficult to buy land as returned men got first dibs on it, cheaper loans and the price set at pre-war prices if bought at auction
This was as it should be (we did not want a return of the WW1 stuff up) but it must have been a difficult time
