  • Hard News: War, now and then,

    John Madden's point that :

The constant wheeling out of the conscientious objector and the faint hint that this was real heroism begins to grate these days. I could never resolve whether it took more guts to go or not to go but bailing out was not braver

That and the wheeling out of the Maori Battalion by the Media as if no other were involved pisses me off
No disrespect to the 25th, their losses on a percentage basis were higher than the rest of the NZ army but there were a lot more men involved than that
Ok ,the conchies now hold the high ground and they were badly treated but I feel my old man and uncles would have swopped if they had known their odds of not coming back after each sorty were 1 in 10 as compared with? How many COs died?

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review #3: The Submission,

I think you have covered everything that I feel is important very well
Especially like points 55 and 87

Now it will be interesting to see if the Turkeys will vote for Christmas or at least if self interest compared with true democracy will prevail

  • Field Theory: Fight Club,

I think Greg has the best response
I note in some that anger can be quite addictive and a great way to bully reasonable people

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review #2: Dual Candidacy,

I changed my mind a couple of times reading this Graeme, which proves how even handed you are
But I am inclined to think it comes down to which do we want, strong Parties or strong MPs looking after their constitunents
Living in a large rural electorate away down south I know what I prefer

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review #1: The Party…,

    Interesting as always Graeme
I tend towards the no threshold at all but see your point about needing three MPs to be effective.
Germany is interesting with its using different thresholds at different levels of government

  • Hard News: Finally, the Teapot Tape?, in reply to Kumara Republic,

While he only received a warning, Ambrose’s actions were illegal, Burgess said.

Future occurrences were likely to be prosecuted.

“We were satisfied on this occasion that there was [prima facie evidence].

But police decided there was not sufficient public interest in the matter going to court, he said.

“I reached the view that a prosecution was not required in this instance.”

In the view of police investigators, the recording was “most likely” on purpose, but at the least “reckless”.

  • Hard News: The Vision Thing, in reply to Rob Stowell,

Rob, serious question, are there any figures on this
Just wondering if as poverty has increased in NZ, has the under-performing tail got any larger?

  • Hard News: A storm in any port,

    What Bart said
But think about it, bulk of NZ population lives in Auckland, all the stuff it uses (apart from food) comes from off shore, dragging it from another port seems........trying to think of the word here......stupid

Bob the builder, hasn't he grown and yes a four year old who plainly can build better than me (with supervision)

  • Hard News: This Is Not A Complicated Issue,

Agree with the above, it is quite disgraceful that it has taken so since the election to get traction on this
On the other hand what the have the Greens been doing about getting a proper set up for their member, I don't think it should come out of the monies they get from Government Services but surely they might have pushed for their new member to be able to participate before now
I sense a bit of grandstanding here but frankly it is a poor showing all round
