that was my understanding too. the new ones:
a: don't run on electricity (like 'clean' pellet fires)
b: are really efficient. "smoke" is just carbon you haven't extracted the heat from yet.we have a 60 year old house (with good floor/ceiling insulation - thanks ECCA), and the log burner had the rooms at the end of the hall at 14C yesterday, while outside was -1C.
i'd call that a win.

at the time it was way more money that i was happy with. but now? i would gladly spend every cent all over again if needed.
i was smug fit to burst sunday/monday.

in Newlands, Suburb to the Stars (TM) we were woken 1/2 doz times in the night by great sheets of part-thawed hail sloughing off and crashing to the ground.
this morning the driveway was one great sheet of ice. had to battle along the clear guttering past a swathe of agapantha carrying a 20kg preschooler and a mountain of gear. then, walk all the way down the hill (on the grass) to get to the bus service.
bit tired of snowpocalypse now.

i think you mean, "their calling is fixing the damn race".
serious question: how in the hell will the pocket money solution work around things like unexpectedly large power bills (e.g. snowpocalypse), or shared utilities arrangements (where some are working and some not). most utilities are not fixed costs.
further, how will they handle the urban mobility of youth? these people change accommodation constantly. you'll need an army of back-office workers to support the paperwork.

Are you also advocating for everyone in employment having their bills go out of their pay packet , becuase there are loads of people in paid work who can’t budget. Being on a benefit does not mean you are unable to pay your bills or unable to budget or unable to control money.

maybe we just send them to someone like Citizens Advice Bureau, or other free budgeting services. learning skills is better than being taught dependency.
