I've blogged Rodney's folly here this morning.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

I'm with Giovanni also: I lost my temper on that thread, but I also learned quite a bit (even from the person I lost my temper with) so it was not a wasted use of intertubing at all, at all

Yes, even though the person you lost your temper with was foolishly rude to you. I do rather regret that I was having a break from the topic at the time.

That's why it's worth carrying on, and not deleting posts or banning people at first excuse. And even real trollish behaviour can usefully flush out good arguments.

But in the case of robbery, it was just the moment of dealing with the same thing, yet again, after two years of it. I basically lost all hope of reform, and then had that decision vindicated by his unpleasant response.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

As an alternative, we could stop mocking the guy who's been banned and cannot respond.

Yeah, let's move on. Given the long and extremely dickish reply I got to my email to him about it, I think I'm being generous, but moving on is the appropriate thing to do.

  • Not Guilty,

And does he need to bring a nice single malt with him?

Talisker. $85 a bottle at Pt Chev Super Liquor. That's as much as $30 cheaper than some other places.

I feel able to share this with y'all having determined that it's not a mistake, just parallel importing. I will have to check their list to see what other gems might be there.

  • Island Life: The resignation of Captain Worth,

    Latest:

Key now says he did hear "a rumour" about Worth's conduct towards women a while ago, but he'd raised it worth Worth, who denied it.

And then when Goff came to him with some fairly specific claims, he raised it with Worth, who denied it.

If the left put up a viable candidate, run a competent campaign and secure a plurality of the vote so be it.

    Fair call.

I'm no fan of John Banks, but unless you're willing to prove massive electoral fraud I really think its time to get the hell over it.

    And that too.

Although I do wish People On The Radio Pretending To Know What They're On About would stop saying that Banks pulled in some huge new cohort of voters last time. As I continually point out, he got almost exactly the same number of votes as when he he was dumped. The people who had previously voted for Hubbard just didn't turn up.

The same is true of Nikki Kaye in Auckland Central. For all the work she put in over months in that electorate (and good on her for that), she got about the same number of votes as Pansy Wong did three years before. The Tizard vote didn't turn up.

I think there's a fairly obvious lesson for the centre-left in those results. And, frankly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Phil Twyford has a handy win in Auckland Central at the next general election.

  • Not Guilty,

NB: I've followed up Scott's warning, sought some media-lawyer advice and removed the link to the Herald story about the suppressed evidence, along with quotes from the story and part of Scott's response. Thanks Scott.

I've left in discussion about why such evidence is deemed prejudicial, because it's useful and interesting. If I've left in something that shouldn't be there, feel free to let me know.

It appears that the Herald has now removed its own story, having become aware that the Court of Appeal placed a permanent suppression order on the evidence.

I can't say I think much of the Court of Appeal's decision. Presumably, it means that anyone writing a book about the case will be forbidden to even mention the evidence in question -- for ever .

  • Hard News: Mt Albert Old-School,

You work with what you've got, and while I've got a lot of respect for the Greens I don't know they've got the activist base and networks in Mount Albert that Labour has (and arguably takes for granted).

Nah, sorry: they should have had every party member in Auckland working for their co-leader. If nothing else, it would have been a very good training exercise.

But it seems like they didn't know how. In one way, that makes sense -- MMP campaigns are national, and important electorate races like this are rare. But if they want the security of an electorate MP, they'll have to start some time.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

Actually, I think it'd actually be nice to see the current thread continue on and get somewhere worthwhile, with the previous 107 pages left as an example of the Bad Old Days.

Feel free. But I'll probably start another one once we know a bit more about what National plans to do with the Copyright Act.
