  • Hard News: Joining the conversation,

I'm so glad Fiona's doing this. When I'm setting my HD recorder (can you tell I still think it's very flash, even if everyone else here is light years ahead of me?), I always turn to her pages to tell me what's good and what's not.

Simon, never having had to deal with the man, I have no idea what he's like as a person. And with that voice? I don't know that I care too much. (Although thank you for not dissing him. Everyone else around me seems to have great disdain for his music.) He has oodles and oodles of soul, and he put on a show tonight. A really splendid show. The musicians were impeccable, and he just let the audience in. We sang, and sang and sang. And his voice made me cry. It was fantabulous. And sad, saying goodbye.

OMG, Danielle. Destroy my whole belief system, why don't you? In the 80's, believe me, Mick Hucknall was something a bit different. A white man that sounded so souly and bluesy was quite unusual. Oh, don't make me justify it, okay? Likes what I likes.

Oh, Andin. Just wonderful. I had no idea it was a cover that SR did. I have to say that I like this one better.

  • Hard News: Every scene needs its stars,

That is lucky as that band gets a pretty tough time from music snobs such as myself (for which I apologise, I can't help it!). Simon Sweetman likes them though....

that's alright, Samuel - I love your music too so my taste isn't all in my bum, is it? No, seriously, Simply Red and bands like them seem only to appeal, in the main, to people who were there when the music was fresh, and something different. Which, believe it or not, in the 80's I think it was. Not all people of my age like them, of course. And to be fair to you, Samuel, one of the things I have always loved about my brother, who is 40, is that he loves all sorts of music. His tastes are incredibly eclectic, but I'm pretty sure that Simply Red doesn't float his boat either.

  • Hard News: Every scene needs its stars,

oh darling, I like some hiphop sort of stuff. I quite like a bit of rap - a bit of what my bro used to do when Breaks Co-op was him and Zane and words, a bit of Nesian Mystic. But hiphop usually just leaves me cold. Anyway, everybody has their own tastes, don't they? Do I get hurt and offended when people slag off Simply Red, or Elton John, or Wet, Wet, Wet or.......well, any number of the musical artists that I love so dearly? No. Cos it's okay. We likes what we likes.

Funny you should say that, Geoff. When I first heard the Cee-Lo Green track, I thought it was an oldie - until the chorus!

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

blame the malign influence of the PAS Women's XV who can swear to make a sailor blush, but still suggest you still think a little about gendered insults.

We try our best to please. I just love the word fuck. My father was a great proponent of it. And on a side note, I was never punished for saying any swear word, and we all swore alot but had my mouth washed out for telling my mum to get stuffed. That's just how we Clarks' roll.

I do try really hard to stay away from gendered insults, and I reserve the c-word for when I am really angry.(despite, um, the cunt links story.) I even try (and mostly fail) not to use dick and cock. As insults.

The only gendered insults I ever use are cunt, and prick - and I haven't called anyone a cunt to their face for a long time. And never a woman. But if I really hate someone, that is what they are to me. But only if they're a man. It's a hard word, and so apparently sacrosanct that it's the most hateful thing I can say about someone.

slut, whore, that kind of thing - that's real ladyhate.

I would never, never, never call someone those names. I have never hated a woman enough to use those words on them. I have, however, called myself a slut. Proudly, really.

So's "gay" -- but my BH's grandnephew (who is a sweetie pie and doesn't have a homophobic cell in his body) has been on the receiving end of *cough* a free, frank and one-sided reading of the riot act the last time he used that as a term of disapprobation within my hearing.

Oh, yes, Craig. I just hate the way that kids bandy "gay" around as an insult. Lazy, lazy insult this one. Like calling someone fat. And so potentially damaging.

Isn't that fantastic, Amy. What does he think about, and why is he there? Indeed.

  • Hard News: Every scene needs its stars,

. Ariel Pink released the standout album of the year for me, Beach House = awesome, Deehunter = awesome etc etc.

Thanks for that, Samuel. One of the things that really interests me is that having previously disparaged much contemporary music - apart from your band's wonderful output, and people like Gianmarco Liguori - as just noise really, I am enjoying a bit of a rethink. Mostly thanks to PAS readers/writers and their recommendations. Much of the best stuff gets lost amongst all the hiphop/heavy rock crap - before I get jumped on, understand that my tastes in music include Simply Red (yes, I'm off to see them tomorrow) and Elton John's earlier musical stylings - so it's just lovely to discover little gems here.
