  • OnPoint: Breaking Point in Sri Lanka,

Perhaps people were interested in good news stories as opposed to backsliding to the old status quo?

dunno. i think that this conflict has pretty much worn out its welcome in the media, at a guess.

we're talking about something with its origins in the 1950s, its major outbreak in the 1970s, its attempted resolution in the 1980s, its "ripening" and decline in the 1990s, and resumption in the 2000s.

and all because some sinhalese nationalists decided in '54(?) there would be only one, "mainstream" language for the entire country.

I, for one, don't need some bloke telling me how exactly I should look to look like, you know, a woman.

a statement of preference, is not a demand for conformity.

i find the research disturbing in the context of striving for what many.... can't think of the word... "caucasians?" think is the ideal female shape.

teenage boy + big top end.

    yawn.

most of that post-pregnancy weight probably adds in just the right place to make her, you know, a woman.

  • Hard News: Things we needed to hear,

yeah... but kiwiblog is the basis of his public persona. you'd think he'd hire at least one money to ensure it keeps a decent standard of comments.

and to be honest, he frequently throws meat to the pack.

some of his islamic/maori dogwhistles have been, quite frankly, disgusting.

  • Yellow Peril: the identity game,

i bet he did hear you

the uncomfortable leaning was directly preceeded by my taking of the piss.

so.... maybe. he might have just had to let one go.

liking the way he's pulling up his commenters on calling clark ugly names though.

that said, might have to find the one on NRT where he stated his uncategorical disgust of her.

  • Hard News: The Solipsistic Left,

jesus... the thread that wouldn't die.

yes. some muslims in some parts of the world, especially the middle east, are freaking nutters with god-complexes.

and yes, some parts of the entire islamic world religion are a bit fucked up. they bully women and gays, they are excessively conservative, and they are heavy and aggressive proselytsiers. but so are great swathes of the christians.

just because some are like that, islam itself isn't a threat to humanity, nor are the people who attend the mosque in kilbirnie a band of terrorists.

and anyone who says they are a band of terrorists is either a bigot or liar.

until they actually blow something up... in which case i'll eat my words.

and until then, as stephen says,

treating them as some sort of subversive, fifth column force of evil is reprehensible.

bit of (non-)anonymous bleating and umbrage here.

i should reiterate. i've read a great number of the same files bazley has.

my opinion of the police was low before that job. it was shored up by the great people i got to work with on that short-term contract, but was permanently destroyed by the stuff i was reading.

    Books and drugs ...

well, if you're going to do that.

Jean Paul Satre, Nausea. Blew my mind.

the aforementioned Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance. Made me realise that the pursuit of knowledge is like, a never-ending journey, man.

A Thousand Plateus. I could only read small glimpses of it, but it added up to a really, really far out picture. but buried underground. because it's all rhizomatic, like.

  • Stories: Life in Books,

joining this conversation realllllly late, but it's good to see most of my old favourites while skimming posts.

i think the book that really adjusted my mindset was james lovelock's ages of gaia(?). someone knicked my copy a few years ago, but it fundamentally changed the way i related to absolutely everything.

it may have had something to do with my organic recreational habits at the time, but the book enabled me to see everything in a related sense.

before reading gaia i saw the world in a siloed, compartmentalised way. but after? i started seeing chains of repercussions from all of my actions. i started to see how the actions of one person can change their social and physical environment if they committed themselves to 'being' the change they wanted to effect.

of course, later i became older, more cynical, and generally skeptical that one individual can do anything worthwhile at all. i'm now convinced that climate change will screw you, me, and everyone else, and there's no way to stop it.

was a nice ride while it lasted though. and i still recycle, consume as little as possible, and try to be good to people, just to be on the safe side.

  • Hard News: The Solipsistic Left,

if putin won't man up about using chechnya "as an example" to other former soviet regions who might be considering secession, why should the turks do the same for armenia?
