  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

I think Matthew slightly misinterpreted what Arthur said:

    Arthur:

The other event is the emergence in Britain of a group of high profile songwriters standing up for the rights of creators against ISPs and those who think music should be free. The Featured Artists Coalition includes artists like Radiohead, Annie Lennox, Robbie Williams, Billy Bragg, Soul II Soul etc.*

    Matthew responds:

The Featured Artists Coalition are in fact demanding payment and their voices to be heard in the negotiations about profit sharing from their work. It's simplistic and misleading to say that they "think music should be free."

But Arthur's still wrong about the FCA. Their justifiable concern is getting paid, but their six key points are all about getting paid by the music industry , not the ISPs or whoever.

Hmm. What would number 6 actually involve? What was the issue there?

I suspect there will be something specific: a cable TV show playing music videos under the pretence of reviewing, or a web service using music on the same purported basis. I'd be concerned if fair dealing was rolled back in any but the most limited circumstances

Featured Artists Coalition Opposes Criminalizing File-Sharing

It actually looks like quite a useful lobby group:

The Coalition will begin by focusing on six areas where it is seeking change:

    1. An agreement by the music industry that artists should receive fair compensation whenever their business partners receive an economic return from the exploitation of the artists’ work.

    2. All transfers of copyright should be by license rather than by assignment, and limited to 35 years.

    3. The making available right should be monetized on behalf of featured artistes and all other performers.

    4. Copyright owners to be obliged to follow a ‘use it or lose it’ approach to the copyrights they control.

    5. The rights for performers should be the same as those for authors (songwriters, lyricists and composers).

    6. A change to UK copyright law which will end the commercial exploitation of unlicensed music purporting to be used in conjunction with ‘critical reviews’.

No 4 is an interesting idea, and the performer's right has some support in the local scene here.

  • Up Front: Boning Up,

Absolutely. I can't bear them. A more convenient way of being choked to death would be hard to find. Perhaps that's part of the attraction, the symbolism. They're saying "I'm tied to X by the neck, quite literally". Where X is whatever made them wear the tie.

Yeah. I don't get the tie voodoo either. But I have managed to get all the way to being the man on the telly without one ...

Why are kids that gullible? Do they need to know more about their sexuality and its place in 2009? Do we all need too?

What's been quoted from the study doesn't say the kids are gullible at all. About 95% of them dealt with the sexual propositioning to some degree (including ignoring it). The remainder were upset and didn't know what to do about it.

The study itself, The Convergence Generation: Management of Cyber Challenges by Teenaged New Zealanders, does what it says on the label. It looks at how young people handle the various challenges of living online. I'll look forward to reading it when it's done.

and who the hell are these predators? Are they from our generation?

You have to remember that Netsafe's director Martin Cocker didn't use the word "predator" in the context of these figures. It was some genius at Radio NZ who decided to do that.

Perhaps some of the communications do come from genuine adult predators. The remainder will be trash-talking, bullying, flirting, or some other kind of behaviour. That's not to underrate the problems teenagers face in knowing what to do, but it's not your caricature predator at play.

BTW, we have Martin Cocker on Media7 tomorrow to talk about it. Places still open if anyone wants to hear that.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

The ultimate quote to use against Campbell is the one he uttered before he became RIANZ CEO at a music industry commission workshop with Phil Tripp in, I think, 2004:

I don't really have too much of problem with file-sharing. For someone like Bic it's the only marketing we've got in some territories.

I can't guarantee those were the exact words, but pretty close. We joked about it on the radio when he got the job.

But I still don't think it's fair to use that as a gotcha. People have professional and institutional roles to play, and Campbell plays his. That's why I keep saying, don't personalise it. It's not about personalities.

These guys do have a genuine problem: they've identified the major P2P music seeders in NZ, who are doing huge traffic. It's reasonable for the owners to wonder what exactly they are going to do about it.

My criticisms of various things RIANZ has said or done under Campbell still stand. And it's no secret up here in Auckland that both RIANZ and APRA feel they've blown it over the current issue.

  • Hard News: Old Friends,

    Righto. I'll ask at TVNZ.

I just wish I'd grabbed the clip while I could. I'd just whack it back up there.

It gets worse: the RNZ site has this- "Internet predators target 1 in 4 *children*" (my emphasis.)

    So it does.

I'd have put the emphasis around "internet predators" and "target", because both have virtually nothing to do withwhat has been revealed of the report the story is purportedly based on.

Amazing. Watching misinformation in action ...

    @Simon

How bloody odd that the Androidss video has gone, it was there a few days back. I guess the TVNZ vultures have swooped and in effect insulted a just passed NZ musician..it's the only thing I can think of and I hope I'm wrong.

It's possible, but I've never known TVNZ to assert its copyright over something like that before.

Could it be Warners, thinking they own it because 'Auckland Tonight' is on this compilation you released?

They have been issuing takedowns across their catalogue as a result of their commercial dispute with YouTube, haven't they?
