  • Hard News: Old Friends,

Wow! I never understood the fuss about Kevin Smith the actor, but this music and his drawings are wicked. Strong New Zealand flavour. I have a new found respect for this man. Thanks Russell.

Delighted to be of service. I like this from 'Toddler Gets Caught in the Rain':

There are many kinds of watchdog
And many, many kinds of meat
Toddler danced the wire, he was the pride
    And joy of his feet

This headline just up in the Herald

Link: Survey finds 25pc of students sexually solicited online

    Anyone trust the "statistic" ?

It's an NZPA story linked to this interview on Nine to Noon today.

It's from the forthcoming Convergence Generation report, which, according to NetSafe director martin Cocker, has found that "one in four [young people] had been aggressively sexual solicited" and analysed responses, including doing nothing about it.

The PhD researcher, John Fenaughty, seems for real, and NetSafe is a good organisation.

But it's interesting to note what Martin Cocker also said in the same interview (I paraphrase):

When you boil it down, it seems that about four or five per cent of young people have had these experiences and are very upset and don't know what to do about it -- so it's definitely not just flirting or something.

That last part isn't in the NZPA story, which has already gone as far as the SMH website:

25% Kiwi teens sexually solicited online.

    Never changes, does it?

  • Hard News: Old Friends,

The Androidss at the Gladstone is one my abiding memories of early 80s Christchurch. And it was always an Iggy Pop cover - but damned if I can remember whether it was "Lust For Life" or "The Passenger". Or perhaps it was both.

They definitely did 'The Passenger' -- it was the big sing-along -- and 'Search and Destroy', but I wouldn't be surprised if they also did 'Lust for Life'.

and places that paragraph next to a photo of Bic.

If Bic Runga isn't 'major' and 'high-profile' then who is?

Interestingly, the nastier comments in the Your Views thread at the time appear to have been culled. I'm quite sure there was more than that there.

This isn't the only time she's had trouble with the paper: in 2004 she arrived home to this crazy front-page story about her comments about racism in New Zealand. I interviewed her on the radio shortly after she got back and she was quite upset about it.

  • Hard News: Old Friends,

I remember how dangerous and rock'n'roll they seemed in the bland suburban school environment especially when the singer announced that one of them had just gotten out of jail!

Strictly speaking, they probably shouldn't have been allowed on the property ...

It should also be noted that there were problems with -- as Paul Henry did on Close Up ) generalising a "crisis" from a single incident at Avondale College. On the recent numbers, Avondale is actually a glowing success story on school violence. Its suspensions for violence against other pupils fell from seven in 2007 to one last year.

The principal, Brett Lewis, is also extremely unhappy with the way the Herald reported various other elements of the story, including using a photo of the wrong Korean student on its front page, and claiming, baselessly, that the students it interviewed had been threatened with expulsion if they spoke to the media.

I think it's important to note that this isn't just a matter of hammering on the original reporter. When the police comms person got back to the Herald, he was dealing with senior editorial staff. The more egregious errors were introduced after that.

I also thought the paper's "correction" was inadequate. It was buried at the bottom of the online version of the original story, where very few people were likely to see it.

Thanks Keith. That segment of the show, including some of the other media use of the same faulty claims, is also on YouTube:

    On generational stereotyping ...

You actually can't ignore the baby-boomers: that cohort moves through the national statistics like the juggernaut it is. Per capita crime, for example, was highest when the boomers were at crime committing age.

At the other end, the funding of that cohort's retirement years represents the greatest liability being faced by the New Zealand state.

They're real. And they have grown up with society being shaped around their needs.

Other generations? Not so much. The Generation X concept reached New Zealand first via Saatchis, after all. At the least it means something different here, much as the Summer of Love didn't get here till the 60s. I find this stuff interesting.

  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

To name but a couple, I wonder if Barney or Kane could do domething similar with Pavement and Stamp?

Is this the right to to get back on my perennial heritage hobbyhorse?

It is this: a modest contestable fund for the digitisation of works held in public archives (where copyright is not asserted to the contrary, obviously). Anyone could apply for it.

So people like the wonderful Jonathan Ah Kit could actually cover their costs in scanning and uploading heritage works. The Mazengarb Report is referenced widely in school and tertiary studies now. It's only possible because Jonathan got off his arse, retrieved it, scanned it and put it online. He also had a big hand in the Mazengarb Wikipedia article.

Unfortunately, funding for digitisation tends to be captured by institutions, because institutions dominate the discussion.

I bring it up every time I'm on one of these committees, but nothing ever happens.
