  • Hard News: Prospects,

We already know our kids who aren't meeting the literacy and numeracy benchmarks. It's harder and very expensive to find good diagnostic information from the data, and then find ways to close those gaps. That's where the money needs to go, not on developing yet more testing.

That sounds like something bureaucrats would do ...

  • Hard News: Prospects,

just saw heather roy and a flotilla of them on cuba st.

my first thought was "everyone last one of them beaten up at school"

Act certainly does seem to have a vastly disproportionate number of ghastly little snots in its fold. Their behaviour at the Epsom debate, towards the Labour candidate Kate Sutton, was reportedly vile.

    Oh cool.

Roy Edroso has the lowdown on Red State's denunciation and excommunication campaign against anyone on the McCain campaign who betrayed Sarah Palin.

North Carolina called for Obama, first Democratic presidential win since Carter took it in 1976.

    364 electorate votes.

    Just Missouri to come.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

Is it sad that my idea of an exciting night out with my wife is to go and see someone give a lecture about copyright reform?

    It's not sad, it's touching.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I'd just like to say in every forum I can manage...
They mean to DNA test innocent people for the police database.

They say they have "legislation already drafted" for that, but has anyone seen it?

Are they really going to permanently keep the DNA samples of people found not-guilty of any imprisonable offence? Sweet Jesus.

Also, the no-parole policy is going to bite them fiscally, if not in other ways. There's major policy suckage going on there.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

As a speaker, he was superb. He was witty, and made spectacular use of PowerPoint.

Given that he was working off a MacBook Pro, I suspect it may have been Keynote he was presenting in. Like Powerpoint, just cooler ...

Note to presenters: less is more. Few of his slides had more than five words, many only one or two. He spoke to the slides, he didn't speak the slides. His knowledge of contemporary culture is clearly broad, as witnessed by his choices of media for examples.

Apart from the actual content of the lecture, I was really looking forward to checking out its presentational element from a media-geek point of view. I wasn't disappointed: his use of the medium is very, very effective.

  • Hard News: History is now,

Google Analytics says we did 20,000 page views on Tuesday (US time) and 26,000 on Wednesday, which I rather suspect is a record.

I mentioned upthread that Tuesday was, according to Akamai, the biggest day ever for traffic to news websites.

Well, I actually prefer competence to the 'vision thing'

Oh, sure. I've never seen managerial government as a particularly bad thing myself.

  • Hard News: History is now,

Bloody hell! I pop off to Welly for lunch with some spin doctors (more of which later) and it all goes funny ...

    Did it start here?

    @Mark

well mixing it up would have been a little more interesting, very little written here this year about Ralph Nadar. understandably... I don't know, i just find it hard to read things that are so one sided. Sure it's a leftwing site, and i piss in that direction, but that doesn't leave much space for unchummy discourse.. hence the malcontent aired today at the mildest issuance of disloyalty to the site protocol.

Well friggin' make some sort of argument instead of being all passive-aggressive and snotty about everyone else here. You'll find people will happily engage you if you do them the credit of advancing a proposition.

Let me start there: Nader calling Obama an "Uncle Tom" yesterday was a pathetic act that suggests nothing so much as that Nader should just retire from public life before he further embarrasses himself. It was an extraordinary act of arrogance from a man who is 30 years past his use-by date.

    So ...
