I still have my thesis on zip disks and floppies.
Are you absolutely sure about that? When did you last check you could still access the data?

Another possible reason you might "give up the fight" is when the other side finally has the incontrovertible proof they need to prove their case beyond tissue-thin plausible deniability?
Just one possibility is all I'm sayin'

Legal Beagle: Strange bedfellows, in reply to
We have had plenty of referendums, they don't do anything. The politicians ignore the results.
Like the introduction of MMP ? Never happened huh?
Some referendums are binding...
Other referendums have been so poorly worded that you cant pay attention to the results. You could have an evenly split population on either "side" of the debate but if you answer the question, as worded, +90% of people had to tick the same box.

The content of the show was great....
a technical/production matter however.... the lighting seemed lacking to this non-expert viewer.
I know its not a studio but a converted venue, and you've mentioned the budget is tight... but the guests faces were at best, only marginally well lit, and yours (Russell) was positively in the shade...
I would have preferred brighter all around, but at least having guests and host lit equally would be a positive step.
But, yeah, great show and looking forward to more.

I'm not saying therapy makes it harder to detect.... just that it is already very hard.... so only a percentage of those who do in fact continue their abuse, will be recorded as repeat offenders in the study.
Estimates of how many abusers are caught and convicted vary, but are usually scary low... well below 50%.... so that means re-offending whether of the "control group" or the "people going through programs" could well be double the amount recorded, no?

But an actual study of outcomes from STOP and two other programmes found an average recidivism rate of 8.1% (5.2% for those who completed the programme) – that’s half the rate from the standard probationary approach,
I had a quick browse, but not thorough read of that report, but I couldnt find how they defined recidivism?
Convictions?
Complaints to the police?
Complaints to other official bodies?
Just ask the person have you done it again? We all know these crimes are massively under reported, and convictions rates are low... Maybe being caught and doing a program reduces your re-offending, or maybe re-offending just isnt being detected?
I'm sure these programs do good, but also I'm not sure you'll ever be able to accurately study how well they fix or prevent people doing stuff again. Only how few get caught again.

but the rest of us don’t.
Whether the process is democratic or authoritarian, it seems fair to limit control over list selection, or in fact any other party rules, to members of the party…
Otherwise, left or right leaning voters could be “helping” the other parties choose their most incompetent and unelectable personnel onto the lists…
-
On TV1's Q+A this past weekend, Matthew Hooten points out that the law already requires a "democratic" list selection process, then proceeds to sum-up the National Party list selection process..
In the National Party, there is a very highly democratic process that they begin with their regional conferences and then their national conferences and then the list gets ordered through this highly democratic process. And then in the final meeting of the list-ranking committee, the leader says what he wants.
He had a smirk on his face...

How about these postage stamps from 1980? There was some controversy at the time about depicting the moko of the departed in that context, but the issue went ahead.
I recall a Maori commenter or possibly comedian, suggesting while it was culturally insensitive, he just thought it was great to have all the pakeha licking the maori back-sides for a change.
It "feels" like a Billy T comment, but I don't think he was on the scene in '80?

I suspect that, as pointed out in the Sunday Star Times, will indeed be the author of his own downfall through quickly breaking one / some of his bail conditions. He’ll be watched like an eagle, too.
I just hope that no one gets hurt if he does break any conditions.
I too, hope that he doesnt harm anyone else, but I’m not confident of it…
Can they impose restrictions upon him indefinitely? I thought parole impositions only lasted till the end of the term of incarceration?
My understanding of parole was that you are under threat of being put back in jail if you break the conditions, up until the entire sentence has passed? What threat do they hold over you if it is already completed?
I hope the guy can either go straight (seems unlikely based on all comments from those familiar with him), or if he really is incapable of that, that he does something that gets him locked up for the rest of his life….. but I cant see how that happens without victims?
