  • Hard News: Telling stories about us,

I’m old enough to have seen and enjoyed “real, in depth” documentaries of a style that are no longer presented…. but I can accept that times have changed and what I’d like to see more of may not ever be offered again…

But what REALLY PISSES ME OFF in “reality style” or “low brow documentaries"…. is not actually giving me my half-hour or hour (less ad breaks of course) of information…

Its all “coming up next we show you XYZ” followed by “heres the XYZ” and then later ” We’ve shown you the XYZ"…..

So theres a commercial half hour made from five minutes of actual (interesting or not) information…

If you watch some old non-fiction TV from the 70’s and 80’s they can seem fairly glacial in pace compared to what we have these days… but at least they showed you once and assumed you’d taken it in and they could build on that and expand on it to show you more… The presentation seems "slow" but there was MORE information offered in the same amount of time...

Modern info-TV seems "fast" in comparison....but they tell you the same thing five times over... it drives me crazy…. arrghh!

  • Hard News: Reputation and remuneration, in reply to Sacha,

Hmm, advising people how to help break the law.

Surely, advising them how to stay within the law, no? :)

(yes, I'm playing devil's advocate- I don't like it either)

  • Hard News: Reputation and remuneration,

The herald article about Mr Dotcom's donations...

Mr Banks says surely it's not against the rules for him or his people to advise potential donators how they can do so anonymously if they want to...

I'd have to agree that seems reasonable....

And if some anonymous donations arrived shortly thereafter, you might guess where they came from and still reasonably, legally, claim not to *know* where they came from...

But Phoning them and thanking them later... whoops... sort of proves it's not anonymous, huh?

  • Hard News: Reputation and remuneration,

So, if there were a by-election, and Nats rather than ACT won it... does that mean National could abandon it's charter-school deal, as Act was no longer a coalition partner?

That might happen if they WANTED to abandon it... but I expect they don't want to?

  • Field Theory: Fight Club,

I've never quite had my coordination together to be successful... but on more than one occasion I have attempted to kick or slap a passing vehicle when I'm on a pedestrian crossing....

It doesn't really help, except in understanding a situation you can't change... but in my experience, a significant subset of the population are more belligerent, abusive, and accusative when they know they are in the wrong... it's like a reflex response to cover up the guilt they feel, or something?

  • Hard News: The real problem with the…,

So, I wonder if sometime you might choose to intentionally slap some egg on your own face on something comparatively inconsequential*, in the hope that it covers up or makes people forget all the other egg left over from the previous bigger or more serious debacle?

    * I'm not trying to suggest privacy/media freedom issues are unimportant, just something the Police might not feel so invested in or responsible for.

  • Hard News: Time to move on,

Some of the people around here are exceedingly clever....

"I’m guessing four people will be convicted of firearms offences and that’s it." - International Observer on that other thread, 16/8/2007

    Bravo!

  • Muse: The Curmudgeon's Guide To The…, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Nah, Rango is what it is. If the first quarter hour makes you feel like your eyes have been waterboarded it’s not going to get any better. Three attempts is more than a fair chance.

Also, to parphrase our host: Torturing your children by making them watch films they don’t like on my say-so? It’s not OK.

I may give it one more try... but I'll approach it as a movie for grown-ups... It's not that I was pained watching... I just couldn't see the appeal for kids, and it seemed a bit slow and boring for them... and their reaction seems to bear that out.

By they way, it's not torture when they are free to walk away and ignore the TV as they see fit... P.S. are you trying to suggest they are not my personal play-things to torment as I see fit? :)

However, if your kids aren’t utterly beguiled by Une vie de chat (A Cat in Paris) they have no souls, and need to be returned for store credit before they kill you in your sleep.

Thanks for the tip on a movie I wasn't aware of.... and yes, If they don't like it, I'll trade them in or see if I can get a refund. :)

  • Muse: The Curmudgeon's Guide To The…,

I have three times started to watch Rango, but can't get past 15 mins without switching it off.... and the kids don't like it either.

You (Craig) say you enjoyed all the animated nominees, and of course, it won. (I was shocked)

Does it get better after the start? Or should I just accept that it's not my cup of tea, even though others say it's good?
