Steve, you're correctly reflecting the stereotype that disabled people couldn't possibly run their own lives.

National surveys linked to the Census show that of the one in five New Zealanders who are disabled (yes, 20%), about half use no support services or equipment at all. Only about one in forty Kiwis need daily support - but even then they are perfectly capable in many areas of life (including voting).

Government is not investing in challenging those fundamental stereotypes that limit expectations for all of us. It would only take the same $5m that is spent on Like Minds each year.

Barriers also need to be removed (like polling booths you can't get into or forms you can't read), and there simply needs to be more support when it's needed. Parents like Hilary and Russell can tell you all about the current rationing.

I am just fucking with you

Rob that's not a good way of ensuring a respectful conversation, surely.

I think it's fair to say that you're not valuing the goodwill in this forum, and the many hours of unpaid expertise folks are contributing.

    Letting yourself down.

"but if he's in the passenger seat, who's driving?"
I think the message is that under National we'll ALL have chauffeurs....

Drat, beaten to it - I was going to say "the help, dear".

And did that choir seem a little short on non-Asian, non-Pakeha faces to you? I guess in Parnell that's diversity.

But McCain's response to her was little better...why are Arabs not 'decent family men' by implication?

    Well spotted.

there is nothing wrong with that statement.

Agree. Median vs average. Journos not challenging quite deliberate mis-use of it or of subsequent lying that a certain tax/Kiwisaver change package "benefits everyone".

So the campaign office distributes flyers containing the smears, and McCain gets to rebut them and look like a decent and honourable chap who's above all of that dirty low-blow fighting.

Rich, I didn't get the impression from the clip that he was expecting it - but given how low these guys will stoop for power, you're probably right.

Obama's smart, positive response means McPalin won't find it easy to pull that stunt again without looking petty and.. unpresidential.

Has no-one understood the difference between average and median in journalism-land?

I read somewhere recently that two thirds of the population earn below that "average" income, but sorry no time to find reference.

  • Discussion: On Copyright,

Rob, the difference between software and music is that there is a viable market for paid support and associated services alongside free software, whereas most people know what to do with music.

If the music industry finds an alternative to its traditional production, aggregation and distribution model, there may be similar opportunities (although non-profit bodies like the Music Industry Commission seem to be picking up some of those potential roles). The power balance between tour promoters and record companies shifting is one sign of that. Others here know way more about that than I do.
